Singer, Jayne M.; Fagen, Jeffrey W. – Developmental Psychology, 1992
Trained 3 month olds to move a 10-object mobile. Changing the mobile to two objects resulted in crying for half the infants. A retention test was given one and seven days later. All infants exhibited retention at one day but only noncriers at seven days. Criers displayed more anger than noncriers in the one-day retention test. (BC)

Squire, Larry R. – Psychological Review, 1991
The role of the hippocampus in memory function is discussed. Work with rats, monkeys, and humans largely agrees concerning its function and structure. The hippocampus is essential for a type of memory designated "declarative," the ability to remember that a visual object was presented in a particular context. (SLD)

Bunting, Carolyn – Schools in the Middle, 1993
Middle school students with neurological impairments suffer academic declines and a reduced sense of self-worth and empowerment. Schools Attuned is a program that helps teachers recognize neurodevelopmental dysfunctions such as attention disorders, memory deficits, language disabilities, and visual and motor impairments. The program also helps…

Saarnio, David A. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1993
Tested a knowledge-based view of early memory development. Assessed preschool children's knowledge about two different scenes and their recall and location memory for objects in those scenes. Found that age, knowledge about categories, and memory for unrelated objects were significant predictors of memory of objects in the scenes. (MM)

Ross, Gail; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1992
Premature infants with subependymal or intraventricular hemorrhage took longer to habituate on a habituation task, and scored lower on a measure of mental development, than did other premature infants or full-term infants. Both groups of premature infants were less successful than full-term infants on an object permanence task. (BC)

Campbell, Ruth; Wright, Helen – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
Examined deaf children for immediate memory of pictures of objects in two experiments. Deaf children did not use rhyme as a recall cue, but deaf children and age-matched children who could hear were both sensitive to name word length in recall. Implications of findings are discussed. (BC)

Abravanel, Eugene – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1991
Describes research on young children's long-term memory under 2 conditions of acquisition: direct imitation followed by a 10-minute delay, or deferred imitation. Children were able to encode and retain as much from visual pickup of modeled acts as from feedback obtained through imitation. (Author/GH)

Bauer, Patricia J.; Mandler, Jean M. – Developmental Psychology, 1992
In an experiment, 13.5-month-old children were tested on 2- and 3-act sequences depicting familiar and novel events. Using elicited imitation, they reliably recalled the sequences in the correct temporal order. In a second experiment, 11.5 month olds accurately recalled 2-act sequences depicting familiar and novel events. (BC)

Singh, Krishna K.; Gudjonsson, Gisli H. – Journal of Adolescence, 1992
Investigated hypotheses generated by Gudjonsson and Clark model of interrogative suggestibility. Adolescent boys (n=40) completed Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale and measures of intellectual skills, memory, field-dependence, hostility, and attitudes toward persons in authority. Suggestibility correlated negatively with intelligence quotient and…

Ratcliff, Roger; And Others – Psychological Review, 1992
Four global memory models were evaluated in 3 recognition memory experiments with 30 college students. Experiments provide receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Data give a clear idea of the behavior of signal and noise distributions in recognition memory. Ways in which results support revision of current models are discussed. (SLD)

Whitbourne, Susan Krauss; Powers, Charles B. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1994
Applied life-span construct model by administering life drawing to 78 older women. Quantitative findings indicated that more positively adjusted women maintained external locus of control, were future oriented, and defined life-span in terms of family. Qualitative data revealed that women who described their lives in positive terms were those who…

DeMarie-Dreblow, Darlene – Child Development, 1991
Reported two studies of the possible relation of knowledge to improvements in recall. Tested 8- to 11-year-old children and college students for knowledge recall before and after they saw videotapes about birds. Although knowledge and memory measures correlated, and most knowledge measures improved after children viewed the videotapes, recall and…

Thompson, Lee A.; And Others – Child Development, 1991
Tested infants at five and seven months of age for visual novelty preference. Tested the same infants at 12, 24, and 36 months by means of a battery of cognitive and language tests that compare novelty preference to general and specific cognitive abilities. Results support recent findings that infant novelty preference is predictive of later IQ.…

Shore, Wendelyn J.; Durso, Francis T. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1990
The relationship between partial word knowledge and instruction was investigated for 132 college students. When correct usage could be chosen on the basis of general semantic constraints, subjects did well and instruction had no effect. However, studying dictionary definitions did increase the amount of specific information available in memory.…

Ackerman, Brian P.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1991
Five experiments were used to determine whether and why second graders, fourth graders, and college students differ in modifying causal inferences about a surprising event in a story. Illustrated how encoding and retrieval factors contribute to inference modification. Results showed small developmental increases in inference modification in…
