Chen, Ruey-Shun; Hu, Yi-Chung – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2003
Discusses sequential patterns, data mining, knowledge acquisition, and fuzzy sequential patterns described by natural language. Proposes a fuzzy data mining technique to discover fuzzy sequential patterns by using the simple partition method which allows the linguistic interpretation of each fuzzy set to be easily obtained. (Author/LRW)

Egghe, L.; Michel, Christine – Information Processing & Management, 2002
Presents a general method to construct ordered similarity measures in information retrieval based on classical similarity measures for ordinary sets. Describes a test of some of these measures in an information retrieval system that extracted ranked document sets and discuses the practical usability of the ordered similarity measures. (Author/LRW)

Egghe, L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1990
Reports data on the application of Bradford's law to several classical bibliographies, for which the underlying law of Leimkuhler and various Bradford groupings are determined. The Leimkuhler law is extended to be applicable to incomplete bibliographies and to the estimation of complete bibliographies from incomplete bibliographies. Formulas and…

Markas, Tassos; Reif, John – Information Processing and Management, 1992
Presents a class of distortion controlled vector quantizers that are capable of compressing images so they comply with certain distortion requirements. Highlights include tree-structured vector quantizers; multiresolution vector quantization; error coding vector quantizer; error coding multiresolution algorithm; and Huffman coding of the quad-tree…

Khoo, Christopher S. G.; Dai, Yubin; Loh, Teck Ee – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2002
Describes the development of new statistical formulas for identifying two- and three-character words in Chinese text by performing stepwise logistic regression using a sample of sentences that had been manually segmented. Concludes that the new contextual information formulas are substantially better than the mutual information formula.…

Burrell, Quentin L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2001
Argues that informetrics needs a rigorous mathematical basis and that informetric processes can be adequately describes within a standard probabilistic framework with stochastic modeling offering a more productive approach than other methods. Highlights include Lotka's Law; robustness and multiauthorship; and resilience and the random component.…

Peters, James V. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2004
Using the methods of finite difference equations the discrete analogue of the parabolic and catenary cable are analysed. The fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio arise in the treatment of the catenary.

Barone, L.; Voulgaridis, G. Z.; Joarder, A. H. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2004
In this paper a more accurate index of asymmetry is studied. Specifically, the use of the left and right variance is proposed and an index of asymmetry based on them is introduced. Several examples demonstrate its usefulness. The question of evaluating more accurately the dispersion of data about the average emerges in all non-symmetric…

Chen, Hongwei; Khalili, Parviz – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2005
In this note we give closed forms for a class of logarithmic integrals in terms of Bernoulli polynomials. This provides a method for unifying a large class of definite integrals.

de Oliveira, E. Capelas; Chiacchio, Ary O. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
The paper considers a class of real integrals performed by using a convenient integral in the complex plane. A complex integral containing a multi-valued function with two branch points is transformed into another integral containing a pole and a unique branch point. As a by-product we obtain a new class of integrals which can be calculated in a…

Sen Gupta, I.; Debnath, L. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
This paper deals with a simple method of evaluation of certain multiple definite integrals. This is followed by two main theorems concerning multiple definite integrals. Some examples of applications are given.

Sobczyk, Jim – Mathematics Teacher, 2005
The concept of how the definite integral is understood by the students deeply with the help of an activity and the connection between the functions [prime]integral of 1/t is described. The definition of integral of 1/t is remembered by the students by exploring the integral systematically and by application of their knowledge of rational…

Dahsah, Chanyah; Coll, Richard K.; Sung-ong, Sunan; Yutakom, Naruemon; Sanguanruang, Sudjit – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 2008
The international literature suggests students frequently resort to the use of formulae when solving stoichiometry problems without understanding the concepts. In prior work we identified Thai student alternative conceptions and ability to solve numerical problem for stoichiometry. The results indicate that many Thai students also hold alternative…

Godfrey, David; Thomas, Michael O. J. – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2008
It has been recognised that many student perspectives on equations and their use of the equals sign have not mirrored those that mathematicians would like to see in tertiary students. This paper tracks transition of understanding of the equals sign by comparing secondary school students' thinking with that of first year university students. We…

Rasmussen, Chris; Blumenfeld, Howard – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 2007
An enduring challenge in mathematics education is to create learning environments in which students generate, refine, and extend their intuitive and informal ways of reasoning to more sophisticated and formal ways of reasoning. Pressing concerns for research, therefore, are to detail students' progressively sophisticated ways of reasoning and…
