Higher Education and the Politics of Boredom: Towards an Affirmative Account
Globalisation, Societies and Education, v23 n3 p812-824 2025
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the political potential of boredom as an affirmative negation of neoliberalism in higher education. On this account, boredom is re-inscribed as a political affect and emotion that interrupts neoliberalism and capitalism. This discussion troubles the idea of boredom as a psychologised, individualised emotion characterised by a resigned affective experience in higher education. Rather, it is argued that boredom may be experienced as detachment and disaffection from the neoliberal structures of higher education, thus serving as a point of departure for revitalising efforts to reclaim the contemporary university. Drawing on the concept of 'politics of boredom', the paper offers an affirmative account of boredom that points to its transformative possibilities and its potential for resistance. The paper provides propositions for future research to explore the political potential of boredom in the midst of profound neoliberal reforms in higher education.
