Data from a number of language (Slavic, Romance, Modern Greek) concerning predicate agreement with the polite plural (semantically singular, but plural in surface structure) suggest that more verb-like predicates tend to agree with the surface subject, while more noun-like predicates tend to agree with the underlying subject. (Author/KM)

Kuno's direct discourse analysis is examined and rejected, and the Prague School concepts of theme and rheme are shown to be relevant to Kuno's data and additional data. It is further shown that an incompatible application of two or more transformations produces sentences that tend to be bad. (SC)

Martinet, Hanne – Linguistique, 1975
This article examines the conditions under which impersonal constructions may be used in French. The basic idea is that few rules govern this use, and that principally it is a matter of lexical interpretation. (Text is in French.) (AM)

Tabouret-Keller, Andree – Linguistique, 1975
This article studies the problem of social identity among six different racial groups in the British Honduras, focusing on what the groups call themselves and what others call them, and on the semantic field of these terms, i.e. the socio-cultural values they represent. (Text is in French.) (AM)

Van Overbeke, Maurice – Linguistique, 1975
This article examines the concept of "antonym" and the various types of antonyms in order to determine a coherent structure. Far from being simple, the structure of antomym is seen as containing a gradation of meaning going from relativity to the absolute, and thus it is seen as a reflection of conceptual dialectic. (Text is in French.)…

Bell, Frank E. – 1981
An outline is presented of how "Interscript," a developing international communication system, operates. The three main elements in "Interscript" are described in turn, as follows: (1) the glyphs or symbols, which are pictographs, ideographs, arbitrary symbols, and generic symbols; (2) "Clearthink", or what would correspond to the identification…

Godden, Kurt – 1979
Donnellan's distinction between attributive and referential uses of definite descriptions is extended to include Lewis' basic categories. The distinction as applied to sentences is brought out by investigating the consequences of the failure of presupposed sentences. Stalnaker uses Donnellan's distinction to support his theory of creating an…

Hooke, Lydia Razran – 1981
A study was conducted to find a manipulation that could be performed on a text (roughly analogous to real instructional material) which would lead readers to process that text more efficiently. One-hundred five college students were placed into either an experimental or a control group. Students in the control group were given an unchanged version…

Benjamin, Robert L. – 1981
The position taken in this paper is that the sentence adverb should be viewed not as an occurrence within a sentence but as a kind of illocutionary force marker of a speech art. Three points are argued in the paper: (1) that current linguistic analyses of sentence adverbs are inadequate even to the purposes of the analysts; (2) that treating…

Goodman, Gail S.; And Others – 1980
The ability of children to process words printed in a second language was studied over the course of a school year as the children acquired increasing familiarity with the language. Sulzby, Elizabeth – 1978
Eighty-four elementary school children participated in a two-part experiment replicating an earlier experiment that tested the hypothesis that children would offer semantic explanations for words presented orally more frequently than for words presented in written form. This experiment used subjects from a population different in socioeconomic…
