Research is reviewed on conversational competence in learning disabled (LD) children. LD children are viewed as eager to fulfill conversational responsibilities while compensating for linguistic inadequacies. Findings emphasize the importance of teaching conversational skills. (CL)

Both German and American children with learning disabilities performed significantly poorer than their age-level controls on semantic, syntactic, auditory memory, and word retrieval tasks. The majority of the language tasks also differentiated the two age levels (7- to 8- and 12- to 13-year olds) for both groups. (Author/CL)

The performance of 15 pairs of learning disabled and nondisabled peers (7-11 years old) on a persuasion task and their recorded conversations during a cooperative construction task were compared.
