Row, Don – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1972
A description of mathematics as a game'' with a statement of rules and an investigation of the consequences is applied to a finite geometry problem concerning sets and subsets of club members and lunches. (DT)

Moiseiwitsch, B. L. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1971
This article shows how ideas of maximum or minimum values of fundamental quantities have developed through the ages. (Author/JG)

Caillez, Francis; Kuntz, Pascale – Psychometrika, 1996
The geometric properties and Euclidean nature of dissimilarity coefficients defined on finite sets are discussed. Several particular transformations are presented that preserve Euclideanarity. The study of a one-parameter family adds to current knowledge of the metric and Euclidean structure of coefficients based on binary data. (SLD)

Learmonth, Amy E.; Newcombe, Nora S.; Huttenlocher, Janellen – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2001
Six experiments examined whether there were circumstances in which toddlers could use landmarks for spatial reorientation. Findings confirmed that geometric information is used for reorientation by toddlers, but give reason to doubt that the use of this information is achieved using a module impenetrable to nongeometric information. (Author/KB)

Scott, Paul – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2006
The Chinese tangram puzzle was known as far back as 1813. It has remained popular ever since. It consists of seven simple polygonal pieces of card which can be assembled in the form of a square. The reader is presented with some popular shape such as the man or cat above, and then asked to construct this using the tangram pieces. There are whole…

National Center for Education Statistics, 2009
This report presents results of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in mathematics at grades 4 and 8. The results from the 2009 assessment presented in this report are compared to those from previous years, showing how students' performance in mathematics has progressed over time. Results for students in the nation, the 50…

Feuerborn, Laura L.; Chinn, Donald; Morlan, Garvin – Professional Development in Education, 2009
This study is an evaluation on whether middle-level mathematics teachers' participation in a week-long in-service course on middle-level mathematics concepts increases their understanding of this content. A secondary purpose of this study is an exploration of teacher perceptions before and after the institute via self-report surveys. Participants…

Ahmed Ibrahim Usman – ProQuest LLC, 2008
The purpose of this study was to assess algebra and geometric prerequisites skills as incorporated into the Applied Calculus Optimization Problem (ACOP) solution. The difficulties that students encounter in applying algebraic and geometric prerequisites at the early stages of the ACOP solution were identified. The study analyzes errors related to…

Todd, Philip; Wiechmann, James – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2008
Computer algebra systems (CAS) have been around for a number of years, as has dynamic geometry. Symbolic geometry software is new. It bears a superficial similarity to dynamic geometry software, but differs in that problems may be set up involving symbolic variables and constants, and measurements are given as symbolic expressions. Mathematical…
