Limitations of current information-processing research on the nature of intelligence are discussed. Major criticisms are that the tasks are static; lack of generalizability from the laboratory to the real world; and collective intellect, motives, goals, circumstances, and ambiguity are not addressed in either theory or research. Examined and compared self-reported reasons for pop music preferences of 397 students in grades five, seven, nine, eleven, and college. Results revealed that characteristics such as melody, mood, rhythm, and lyrics were the most important reasons for selection. Differences in response by age and background characteristics were noted.
