Invisible and All-Too-Visible Women: Reflecting on Jewish Modesty When Reading Graphic Novel Adaptations of Jewish Texts
Journal of Jewish Education, v91 n1 p26-46 2025
This study explores how graphic novel adaptations of Jewish texts, read by Modern Orthodox young women, allow students to engage with "tzniut" (modest dress) and the balance between tradition and contemporary American life. Fifteen adolescents participated in the study, discussing "tzniut" during and after reading three adaptations. Results show participants using visual representations of Biblical and Talmudic women in graphic novels as a resource to inquire into gender and modesty, placing modest women as individuals who choose to differentiate themselves from a modern society that objectifies women. Many connected "tzniut" to a Jewish past, though not necessarily a historically accurate past.
