A total of 57 7- and 8-year-old subjects matched on measures of socioeconomic status, locus of control, need for social approval, and self esteem were assigned to two affect conditions and one control condition. It was found that from second to third generation, Mexican American children increasingly approach Anglo American norms with respect to field independence, reading achievement, and math achievement. Lawler, measures of higher-order need satisfaction, locus of control, and intrinsic motivation were obtained from 252 female assembly line workers. Obese undergraduate women (N = 100) were assigned from stratified blocks to one of five experimental conditions. Both the weight reduction manual and behavioral contract treatments were significantly effective at posttreatment and follow-up; the self-determination group did not differ from either control group.
