Peer reviewedJensen, Arthur R. – American Educational Research Journal, 1980
Sibling data may be used as a covariant statistically controlling family background for testing the adequacy of age-standardized scores; for testing the interval scale of mental measurements; for analyzing correlations into between- and within-family components; and for detecting cultural sources of variance. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Educational Research, Elementary Education, Family Influence
Peer reviewedHsu, Louis M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
In two treatment-repeated measurements designs, the ratio between the unbiased variance of the differences and twice the variance of the errors of measurement can be used to test for interaction of subjects and treatments. The use of this statistic is illustrated. (Author/CP)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Aptitude Tests, Error of Measurement, Mathematical Formulas
Peer reviewedJurich, Anthony P. – Adolescence, 1979
Among the 160 students studied, demographic, cognitive moral development level and college environment variables interacted in highly complex patterns to influence the student's choice of premarital sexual standard. This suggests that a general systems approach, rather than univariate analysis, is needed to fully study complex moral phenomena.…
Descriptors: College Environment, College Students, Demography, Moral Development
Peer reviewedKress, Gerard C.; Dogon, I. Leon – Journal of Dental Education, 1981
Undergraduate performance and standardized test scores were correlated with dental school performance for 131 members of nine Harvard School of Dental Medicine classes to determine the predictive validity of the earlier variables. The only significant positive correlation was of the Dental Admission Test and dental National Board Examination, part…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Dental Schools, Grade Point Average, Higher Education
Celotta, Beverly; Rosenthal, Arlene Coopersmith – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1981
Counseling needs assessment data were reduced using percentile ranking, cluster analysis, and factor analysis. Results were compared with those obtained by a guidance steering committee using percentile rankings. Only the cluster analysis yielded a moderate number of meaningful needs-groupings. The steering committee approach may be best. (Author)
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, Committees, Comparative Analysis, Elementary Education
Howard, Edward N.; Norman, Darlene M. – Library Journal, 1981
This description of the Vigo County Public Library's implementation of planning, programming, and budgeting focuses on its output measurement system, Complete Service Statistics. Measures of five service categories are developed--lending, facilities, information, production, and staff--to gather statistics for library management. (RAA)
Descriptors: Evaluation Methods, Library Administration, Library Expenditures, Library Services
Dotson, Charles O. – Research Quarterly, 1980
Research in physical education has too often been a random process. The integration of past work with current theory is necessary for the advancement of exercise and sports models to the state of high logical density. (CJ)
Descriptors: Athletics, Educational Research, Higher Education, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedFrancis, J. Bruce; And Others – Review of Higher Education, 1978
(NOTE: See HE 512 216 for journal name change information.) The findings, methodology, and policy implications presented in Astin's longitudinal study of college students, are reviewed by four higher education scholars. These include J. Bruce Francis, Gerald Gurin, Arthur W. Chickering, and G. Lester Anderson. (SF)
Descriptors: College Students, Followup Studies, Higher Education, Longitudinal Studies
Peer reviewedGriffith, Belver C.; And Others – Journal of Documentation, 1979
Indicates that citation data conform to the Brookes model, that a scientific journal which is used as an archive ages slowly, and that one which supports a research front ages quickly--aging being dependent not only on the material, but on the user. (Author/SW)
Descriptors: Citation Indexes, Citations (References), Information Retrieval, Information Utilization
Peer reviewedShannon, A. G. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1979
The semantic differential--one approach to attitude measurement--basically records a combination of a person's associations with a particular concept with a scaling procedure. This paper considers the implications of such a device for teachers of mathematics. (Author/MK)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Attitudes, Data Analysis, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedBliss, Joan; And Others – European Journal of Science Education, 1979
Reported is a method for the analysis of qualitative data, based on the linguistic device of systemic networks used to represent a structure of possibilities. Some initial applications are described, and work in progress, including a computing system, is outlined. (Author/HM)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Data Processing, Educational Research, Language Research
Peer reviewedMcDonald, Roderick P. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Two major and two minor principles are shown to serve to generate a large number of multivariate models, including canonical analysis, factor analysis, and latent trait test theory. The statistical underpinnings of the theory are discussed. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedDaly, John A. – Communication Monographs, 1978
Compares 14 instruments measuring social-communicative anxiety and concludes that virtually every measure was significantly and strongly associated with most other measures and most reflected the same general construct. (JMF)
Descriptors: Communication Apprehension, Communication Research, Comparative Analysis, Individual Characteristics
Peer reviewedThornton, Robert J.; Weintraub, Andrew R. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1979
This study analyzes the effects that state licensing requirements have had on barber supply and on new entrants into the trade over the period 1969-1973. The authors found that the minimum education requirements, barber school hours required, and months of apprenticeship required have had little or no significant effect. (MF)
Descriptors: Barbers, Certification, Educational Needs, Labor Supply
Peer reviewedTague, Jean – Canadian Library Journal, 1979
Discusses the use of computer information systems to aid in library management functions such as planning, control, and decision making. Outlined are applications of macroanalysis (comparative library data, performance measures, use statistics) and microanalysis (circulation, acquisition, catalog support, and online catalog systems). (SW)
Descriptors: Computers, Guides, Information Utilization, Library Administration
