Ben-Haim, D.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1985
The evidence suggests that students in grades 5 through 8 have difficulty relating isometric type drawings to the rectangular solids they represent. Errors made by students were analyzed and the effect of instruction in spatial visualization activities assessed. (MNS)

Dell, Gary S. – Psychological Review, 1986
A theory of sentence production is presented that accounts for facts about speech errors, including (1) the kinds of errors that occur; (2) the constraints on their form; and (3) the conditions that precipitate them. Two simulation models are introduced to illustrate how the theory applies to phonological encoding processes. (Author/LMO)

Sleeman, Derek H. – AEDS Monitor, 1985
Reports results obtained when 24 14-year-old students were presented with algebra tasks by a computer-based modeling system and, four months later, comparable paper and pencil tests together with detailed interviews. Comparison of the results revealed profound misunderstandings of algebraic notation and identified classes of strategies used by…

Levitt, Andrea G.; Healy, Alice F. – Journal of Memory and Language, 1985
Describes two experiments in which subjects read aloud pairs of nonsense syllables rapidly presented on a display screen or repeated the same syllables presented auditorily. Results support an explanation of the speech error generation process in which a segment's strength is a function of its frequency of occurrence in English. (SED)

Mitton, Roger – Reading Teacher, 1986
Notes the existence of a collection of computer-readable files containing misspellings of English words, which is now available to researchers from the Oxford Text Archive in England. Describes the content of the collection. (FL)

Eisenstein, Miriam – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1983
Recent research on native speakers' reactions to nonnative speech that views listeners, speakers, and language from a variety of perspectives using both objective and subjective research paradigms is reviewed. Studies of error gravity, relative intelligibility of language samples, the role of accent, speakers' characteristics, and context in which…

Thompson, G. Brian – Journal of Research in Reading, 1984
Concludes that there is no adequate support for recommending that teachers attempt to increase the incidence of a child's self-corrections when reading. (FL)

Sadowski, Barbara R.; McIlveen, Delayne Houston – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
What two teachers found when they took a close look at the results of a sentence-solving test given in grades four and five is reported. Error patterns appeared less frequently after instruction but recurred on retention tests. How students can be helped is suggested. (MNS)

Selden, John; Selden, Annie – Online Submission, 2004
In this paper, we will discuss the way various features of consciousness interact with each other and with cognition, specifically, the cognition of mathematical reasoning and problem solving. Thus we are interested in how consciousness and cognition "work," in a somewhat mechanistic way, rather than in larger philosophical questions about…

Maracci, Mirko – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
This paper reports on the first stage of a research project still in progress aiming at identifying undergraduate students' difficulties and errors in solving linear algebra problems. Some students' difficulties related to very basic notions of vector space theory are shown and discussed with respect to both Balacheff's theory of conceptions and…

Patz, Richard J.; Wilson, Mark; Hoskens, Machteld – 1997
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) collects data in the form of repeated, discrete measures (test items) with hierarchical structure for both measures and subjects, that is complex by any standard. This complexity has been managed through a "divide and conquer" approach of isolating and evaluating sources of…
