Bromley, David G.; And Others – Phi Delta Kappan, 1978
If the explanations offered are correct, inflation should be leveling off and a small amount of deflation might be expected. The major initial impact of declining enrollments, changing student quality, and financial pressures has already been felt, and the pressure within academe to contain grade inflation is mounting. Ballou, Roger A. – Journal of College and University Student Housing, 1985
Investigated how various residence hall arrangements affect the academic performance of freshmen (N=1,985) at five liberal arts colleges. Results indicated that freshman academic performance was neither positively nor negatively affected by their placement in single-sex, coed, all-freshman, or freshman and upperclass residence halls. de Nevers, Noel – Engineering Education, 1984
Provided are results of using and faculty reaction to a method designed to reduce grade inflation. Each student's grade is recorded and a new measure of performance is also computed and recorded. The formula used is: "honors point score" equals student's grade (0 to 4) minus class average grade (0 to 4) plus 3. (JN)

Humphreys, Lloyd G. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1976
Refutes Mauger and Kolmodin's (1975) conclusion (see EJ 133 651) that their data does not support the author's (1968) conclusion that senior college grades are much less predictable from entrance information than freshman grades. States that their conclusion was not supported by their data and that the design of their study would allow no outcome…

Bryant, Debbie K. – 1997
The American College Testing (ACT) Program's Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) was chosen as Arkansas'"rising junior exam" to measure learning in the general education curriculum. A study was conducted with a group of 124 college students to determine the predictability of CAAP scores based on ACT scores and cumulative…

Woodruff, David J.; Ziomek, Robert L. – ACT Inc, 2004
This report presents the results of a study investigating inflation in high school grade point average (HSGPA). Inflation was measured by comparing HSGPA to ACT Assessment (ACT) scores over the years 1991 to 2003. The results indicate the presence of grade inflation over the 13 years. That is, HSGPAs increased without a concomitant increase in…

Keefer, Karl E. – J Educ Res, 1969
Self estimate of achievement is just as good a predictor as pre-college entrance tests and a better predictor when students receive mid-course grades as cues. Self-prediction neither increases nor decreases in accuracy during a 4-year program. Entrance tests become less accurate as predictors during the 4 years. The most recently earned grades,…

Shannon, James L. – Education, 1979
Chi-square analysis compared students' grade point averages (GPA) using both 5 and 12 point grading scales. Change in GPA's was significant with students more likely to have lower GPA's with 12 point scale. Discusses implications for college-university evaluation of high school transcripts. (DS)

Smits, Niels; Mellenbergh, Gideon J.; Vorst, Harrie C. M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2002
Studied the use of grade point average as a missing data technique for unavailable grades in school grade records. Results of 2 studies, 1 involving 2,080 Dutch college students, and the other involving 446 Dutch college freshmen, show that alternative missing grade methods produced better and more consistent predictions than other missing data…

Kapoor, Bhushan L.; Lakhanpal, Bharat – Journal of Education for Business, 1990
A study measured the differential performance between 27 students using computer-assisted instructed (CAI) and 31 taught by traditional methods. No significant difference was found between performance of experimental group (CAI) and the control group (traditional) with respect to the effect of CAI alone. However, when students' prior grade point…

Gilman, David A.; Swan, Edward – NASSP Bulletin, 1989
While grade point averages and class rank are firmly entrenched in our educational system, they are not particularly reliable or valid indicators of student achievement. Introducing weighted grades creates additional problems. If schools were to eliminate this system, some motivation for grades and easy coursework would disappear. Includes four…

Danko, Kenneth; And Others – Journal of Education for Business, 1992
Results of a study to develop predictive models of student success in intermediate accounting suggest that an internally generated diagnostic examination score and overall grade point average are most closely related to the course grade in the first semester. (JOW)

Nourayi, Mahmoud M.; Cherry, Alan A. – Journal of Education for Business, 1993
Completion of the Myers Briggs Type Inventory by 103 accounting majors revealed no significant differences among personality types in achievement, except that sensing types perform better in accounting in general. Results seem to belie the suggestion that accounting attracts introverts and that the intuitive type is best suited to accounting in…
