The Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy (CFEE) has begun a 10-year study of educational policy that reflects a world transformed by science and technology. Links between education and the economy and how a national science policy will affect education and the economy are among the areas CFEE will investigate. (JN)

A model organized around the predominance of specific commodities at different times is used in a case study of the sequence of extractive export economies in the Amazon basin from the colonial period to the present. Examined social and psychological factors related to suicide, using a sample of primitive societies from the Human Relations Area Files. Results showed suicide prevalence was high where the society is stable agricultural, expects either very restrained or very open emotional expression, and emphasizes individual pride and shame.
