Short Take: Counternarratives in Education Research
Megan Lee1; Danielle Augustine2; Melinda Moore2
Field Methods, v37 n2 p164-171 2025
Narratives that dominant the discourse of the experiences of people of color, specifically in education settings, are incomplete. Therefore, identifying methodological approaches that emphasize the perspectives of minoritized groups is essential. Counternarratives have been applied to help (re)tell stories of the oppressed to challenge dominant and racialized perspectives. This short take provides one example of a step-by-step guide that draws on critical race theory and the use of counternarratives as a methodology to incorporate an ethnic and racial perspective in research.
