Masini, Blase E. – 2001
The opportunity for U.S. students to learn algebra and geometry in the eighth grade was studied by looking at exposure to instruction using teacher reports of content coverage from a subset of 296 classrooms participating in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. Classrooms were classified according to the ethnic composition of…

Alberta Learning, Edmonton. Learning and Teaching Resources Branch. – 2000
This teacher resource manual is designed to help teachers implement the Mathematics Preparation 10 course. This manual is a support document that provides helpful information to classroom teachers. The general and specific outcomes of the program of studies for Mathematics Preparation 10 are discussed. These outcomes have been shared to show that…

WGBH Educational Foundation, Boston, MA. – 2003
Many aspects of string theory are abstract and difficult for even theoretical physicist to fully comprehend. The activities in this guide are designed to help teachers and students better understand some of the basic concepts underlying particle physics and string theory. A list of additional resources and a glossary are also included. Each…

Mitchelmore, Michael C. – 2002
Although mathematics deals with generalizations relating abstract ideas, very little attention has been given in the mathematics education literature to the role of abstraction and generalization in the development of mathematical knowledge. In this paper, the meanings of "abstraction" and "generalization" are first explored by…

Bloom, Walter R. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1983
How geometry can play an important role in the teaching and learning of mathematics is discussed. The past roles of geometry in the Australian curriculum, possible approaches to teaching geometry, and the role of geometry today are each discussed, with some suggestions for teaching brighter students. (MNS)

Esbenshade, Donald H., Jr. – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Discussed is the use of the book Flatland, written by Edwin Abbott, as a novel assigned for reading in secondary school geometry. The assignment is largely designed to reverse the low student interest in geometry. It is noted that overall the book was well received by students. (MP)

Horak, Virginia M.; Horak, Willis J. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1982
The effects that locus of control has upon mathematics achievement were analyzed using inductive and deductive methods of instruction. The analysis revealed a significant interaction for the subtest of items testing lower-level understanding. (Author/PN)

Chartrand, Gary; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Problems involving multicolored cubes are discussed with examples of Instant Insanity and Rubik's Cube cited. Sections cover defining chameleonic cubes, producing such a cube, and extending understanding to multidimensional cubes. One theorem proved is that for each positive integer, every cube of that size is chameleonic. (MP)

Marino, George – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
Many students appear to enjoy mysteries at the same level that they hate proofs. It is felt that the solutions of the two can be so alike that their diagrammatic forms will coincide. One geometry and three mystery problems involving logic for solution are presented. (MP)
