Peer reviewedConlon, Kristine M. – Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, 1992
Native English speakers have difficulty determining which form of direct address is appropriate in German, and students also need practice in giving commands to one another. This article describes an easily organized drill covering both areas. (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Games, German, Interpersonal Communication, Language Proficiency
Peer reviewedMain, Linda – Journal of Library Administration, 1992
Reviews the literature on computer simulation modeling for library management and examines whether simulation is underutilized because the models are too complex and mathematical. Other problems with implementation are considered, including incomplete problem definition, lack of a conceptual framework, system constraints, lack of interaction…
Descriptors: Administrator Attitudes, Computer Simulation, Decision Support Systems, Library Administration
Peer reviewedMagee, Kevin N.; Overall, John E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Formulae for estimating individual rater reliabilities from analysis of treatment effects are presented and evaluated. Monte Carlo methods illustrate the formulae. Results indicate that large sample sizes, large true treatment effects, and large differences in the actual reliabilities of raters are required for the approach to be useful. (SLD)
Descriptors: Effect Size, Estimation (Mathematics), Experimental Groups, Mathematical Formulas
Peer reviewedHarwell, Michael R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
A methodological framework is provided for quantitatively integrating Type I error rates and power values for Monte Carlo studies. An example is given using Monte Carlo studies of a test of equality of variances, and the importance of relating metanalytic results to exact statistical theory is emphasized. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Data Interpretation, Mathematical Models, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedStorms, Gert; Delbeke, Luc – Psychometrika, 1992
Y. Takane and J. Sergent developed a model (MAXRT) for scaling same/different judgments and response times (RTs) simultaneously. The adequacy of the assumption that RTs are distributed log-normally is considered, and the effect of a violation of this assumption is investigated via a computer simulation. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Equations (Mathematics), Goodness of Fit, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedJameson, Daphne A. – Bulletin of the Association for Business Communication, 1993
Describes a simulation that provides a realistic business context and gives participants the opportunity to experience a clash of cultural values. Notes that the participants are divided into three fictional cultures with specific cultural profiles. Notes that the simulation has been successfully used with undergraduates, MBA students, and…
Descriptors: Business Administration Education, Business Communication, Business Education, Class Activities
Peer reviewedXu, Li D.; Li, Ling X. – Information Processing and Management, 1992
Provides a conceptual framework for information systems (IS) that can be used in AIDS intervention and prevention (AIP). System components are analyzed, including a database, decision support systems (DSS), expert systems, and software; potential applications of ISAIP are suggested; and an example of a system implemented at Wright State University…

Peer reviewedGraham, John W.; Collins, Nancy L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Common approaches to examining the relationship between multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data and variables outside the MTMM data are compared: averaging various means of each trait and estimating LISREL computer program models, and estimating only relationships between MTMM traits and the outside variables. Problems of correlational bias are…
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Computer Simulation, Correlation, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedThompson, Paul A. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Application of the bootstrap method to complex psychological analysis is illustrated using a simulation experiment with two populations with small and large samples. The method provides variance estimates, allows testing of nested competing models, and gives a preliminary idea about parameter variability. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Equations (Mathematics), Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedRoss, S. M. – Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 1991
The teaching and learning potential of interactive video (IV) are explored. Some of the programs currently in use are described. The use of IV for simulations, practical work, problem solving, and presentational skills are discussed. (KR)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Computer Software Reviews, Higher Education
Crisci, Gerald – Instructor, 1992
Creating a stock market simulation for the classroom computer reinforces math skills and can help students gain a good sense of how current events affect the economy, how to manage money and understand profit and loss, and how to use spreadsheet software. (IAH)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Courseware
Peer reviewedReise, Steven P.; Due, Allan M. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1991
Previous person-fit research is extended through explication of an unexplored model for generating aberrant response patterns. The proposed model is then implemented to investigate the influence of test properties on the aberrancy detection power of a person-fit statistic. Difficulties of aberrancy detection are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Simulation, Item Response Theory, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedBockenholt, Ulf; Bockenholt, Ingo – Psychometrika, 1991
A reparameterization of a latent class model is presented to classify and scale nomial and ordered categorical choice data simultaneously. The model extension represents a nonhomogeneous population as a mixture of homogeneous subpopulations. Simulated data and data from a magazine preference survey of 347 college students illustrate the model.…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Classification, College Students, Computer Simulation
Peer reviewedMason, Julia A.; Jones, Graham A. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1994
Describes a problem formulated by fourth-grade students about having more pizza for lunch, and the clarifying, predicting, modeling, simulating, comparing, and extending activities that occurred in addressing the problem from a probabilistic perspective. (MKR)
Descriptors: Charts, Diagrams, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Epstein, Robert – Educational Technology, 1993
Describes generativity theory based on the probabilities of many behaviors that are in competition and considers its effect on creativity. Topics discussed include previous and current generativity research, including behavior charts and frequency profiles; computer simulations; skills that improve generative processes; and creativity training in…
