Interviews with 26 nursing students in a Ph.D. program compared their perceptions of lifelong learning with the literature. Students identified practical applications of lifelong learning as well as deterrents and reservations about participation, including lack of time and the perception of it as compulsory. A gerontology doctoral program used the concepts of homeostasis and complexity to present biomedical and psychosocial issues. Data from 14 students showed that homeostasis was more useful for biomedical than psychosocial issues. Complexity helped in understanding interactions between the two. (SK)
