Peer reviewedScalzitti, Joyce – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
A sample lesson is given in which students apply mathematics on a hypothetical trip. (MK)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Lesson Plans, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedClaverie, Maurice J.; Dupas, Alain P. – Impact of Science on Society, 1979
Models of global energy demand, a lower-growth-rate model developed at Case Western Reserve University and the H5 model of the Conservation Committee of the World Energy Conference, assess the features of decentralized and centralized electricity generation in the years 2000 and 2025. (BT)
Descriptors: Development, Electricity, Energy, Futures (of Society)
Peer reviewedRevelle, William – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Hierarchical cluster analysis is shown to be an effective method for forming scales from sets of items. Comparisons with factor analytic techniques suggest that hierarchical analysis is superior in some respects for scale construction. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, Factor Analysis, Item Analysis, Rating Scales
Peer reviewedCrosbie, Paul V. – Social Psychology Quarterly, 1979
Six major theories of status inconsistency were tested in a small-groups setting. When inconsistency variables were taken alone, all six theories were relatively strong predictors of inconsistency effects. When added to original status rankings, inconsistency variables became uniformly weak predictors. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Group Dynamics, Interpersonal Relationship, Questionnaires, Simulation
Gardner, Martin – Scientific American, 1979
Discusses some mathematical games concerning the packing of squares. (HM)
Descriptors: Educational Games, Game Theory, Games, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedCarter, David S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
There are a variety of formulas for reducing the positive bias which occurs in estimating R squared in multiple regression or correlation equations. Five different formulas are evaluated in a Monte Carlo study, and recommendations are made. (JKS)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Correlation, Mathematical Formulas, Multiple Regression Analysis
Childers, Victor E. – Indiana Social Studies Quarterly, 1979
Suggests how to make global business education courses on the college level more of an international experience for American and foreign students. Suggestions include that students be encouraged to study abroad, participate in simulations of world trade experiences, study foreign languages, and develop sensitivity to other cultures. (DB)
Descriptors: Business Education, Educational Objectives, Educational Practices, Foreign Students
Ellington, H. I.; Addinall, E. – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1979
Describes the development of a structured science lesson around a case study simulation. The rationale for this approach is explained, and two specific examples, The Buenafortuna Power Project and Power for Elaskay, are described. (Author/CMV)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Communication Skills, Course Descriptions, Decision Making
Menges, Robert J. – Educational Technology, 1979
Describes videotaped simulations of classroom incidents and interviews intended to elicit faculty discussion about teaching. The use of video as a discussion device is addressed and an analysis of vignette discussions is given. (RAO)
Descriptors: College Faculty, Discussion, Faculty Development, Group Discussion
Peer reviewedGlazzard, Peggy – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1979
Descriptors: Hearing Impairments, Inservice Teacher Education, Learning Activities, Physical Disabilities
Peer reviewedWohltjen, Henry; Dessy, Raymond – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
The design and use of an instrument simulator is described. Used for student laboratory experiments illustrating the use of mini-computers, it can provide, at very low cost, a repetitive, repeatable output to duplicate the readout of various instruments such as electrochemical experiments, mass spectrometers, pulsed magnetic experiments,…
Descriptors: Chemistry, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computers, Data
Stewart, Peter A. – Physiologist, 1979
Defines and discusses the analog computer and its use in a physiology laboratory. Includes two examples: (1) The Respiratory Control Function and (2) CO-Two Control in the Respiratory System. Presents diagrams and mathematical models. (MA)
Descriptors: Analog Computers, Computer Assisted Instruction, Higher Education, Mathematical Models
Armstrong, David G. – Law in American Society, 1977
Secondary teachers can involve students in a mock trial based on a 1975 New Jersey Superior Court case involving "thermal pollution." Article provides teachers' instructions; background data for plaintiff, defense, and witnesses; debriefing questions; and capstone activity. Available from: Law in American Society Foundation, 33 North LaSalle…
Descriptors: Conflict Resolution, Court Litigation, Environment, Environmental Education
Peer reviewedBarker, Frederick L.; Fredericks, Robert J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes seven computer simulations of laboratory experiments that allow students to direct experiments, make observations, and record data. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Computer Assisted Instruction, Instruction, Laboratory Experiments
Peer reviewedThorne, James M.; Matheson, Kenneth Lee – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes a laboratory teaching method in which students are given a simulated research problem to solve in groups by planning and laboratory work. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Instruction
