Thal, Donna J.; Barone, Patricia – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1983
The performance of language impaired children (four to eight years old) on auditory identification and sequencing tasks which employed different stimuli was studied in two experiments. Results indicated that some children performed significantly better when words rather than tones were used as stimuli.(Author/SEW)

Allen, George D. – Journal of Child Language, 1983
Sensitivity to differences in lexical stress was studied in monolingual French-, German-, and Swedish-speaking four- and five-year-olds. For most discriminations the older children performed better, but for a trisyllabic discrimination not found in French, the older children performed less well, supporting an attunement theory of language…

Jordan-DeCarbo, Joyce – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1982
The relationship between kindergarten children's aural discrimination or aural ability and sex, involvement in a decision-making process, readiness training that includes singing of songs and resting-tone recognition, and reinforcement of tonal patterns with songs that provide a tonal framework was investigated. (AM)

Hole, Jonquil – ELT Journal, 1983
Prompted by a lack of materials to test students' discrimination and production of minimal pairs and similar words, a teacher developed a technique that uses actual production of words in sentences. Students' reactions have been very positive, and the test is brief and simple to administer. (MSE)

Eilers, Rebecca E.; Oller, D. Kimbrough – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1980
The discrimination of minimally paired speech sounds by seven severely retarded children (mean age 3.2 years, and mean IQ 38.4) was compared with the discrimination performance of eight normally developing 7-month-old infants. (Author/PHR)

Bonnet, G. – Journal of Phonetics, 1980
Reports a study which illustrates that a listener can anticipate the score of the opposing team in sports match results from the variation in the announcer's intonation. Investigates how reliable this prediction is and what linguistic features it involves. Relates these findings to general problems in intonation contour interpretation. (PMJ)

Mills, Carol Bergfeld – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1980
Reports two experiments which support the hypothesis that reaction time is faster to phonemes when the phonetic context matches the listener's expectation than when the vowel context is different. Reaction time to syllable targets is equal to phoneme, matched context targets. (PMJ)

Norrelgen, Fritjof; Lacerda, Francisco; Forssberg, Hans – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2002
A study investigated temporal resolution of auditory perception (TRAP), verbal working memory, and speech perception in 15 children with language impairment and 99 controls. No deficits in TRAP were found in the subjects and thresholds were similar. There were significant differences in performance on speech perception and verbal working memory.…

Kennedy, Karen M.; Backman, Joan – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1993
Ten students (ages 11-17) with severe learning disabilities received a comprehensive remedial program and another 10 received the remedial program plus the Lindamood Auditory Discrimination in Depth Program. Significantly greater gains in phonological awareness and phonetic spelling strategies were noted for the Lindamood students. Reading and…

Massaro, Dominic W.; Burke, Deborah – Developmental Psychology, 1991
In three amplitude discrimination experiments involving a backward masking task, children's rate of perceptual processing was compared to that of adults. Developmental differences in discrimination were compensated for by increases in the psychophysical difference between test tones. No developmental differences in rate of perceptual processing…

Most, Tova; Frank, Yael – Volta Review, 1991
Twenty-two hearing-impaired children (ages 9 to 13) with a hearing loss of 80 dB or greater completed 3 tasks of intonation perception and production. Acoustic analysis suggested a relationship between imitation and discrimination of intonation contours and a relationship between imitation and production of orally read sentences when a rising…
