Findler, Nicholas V. – Scientific American, 1978
This familiar card game has interested mathematicians, economists, and psychologists as a model of decision-making in the real world. It is now serving as a vehicle for investigations in computer science. (Author/MA)

Borrie, Morag; Burghes, David – Mathematics in School, 1978
A mathematical model giving weight which can be lifted as a function of bodyweight is formulated and compared with the actual data for the flyweight through the heavyweight classes. (MN)

Vest, Floyd – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1976
An analysis of methods of teaching children to solve verbal arithmetic problems is presented together with transcriptions of interviews in which children solve problems by reference to problem types. (SD)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Instruction, Logical Thinking
Robin, Anthony C. – Mathematics Teaching, 1976
Finding the shortest route between two points can be approached by vector methods. Several types of matrices modelling a map of 6 cities are described. (SD)

Th.van der Kamp, Leo J.; Mellenbergh, Gideon J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Joreskog's model of cogeneric tests is used to analyze agreement between raters. Raters are treated as measuring instruments. The model of cogeneric tests, of which classical parallelism and tau-equivalence are shown to be special cases, is applied to teachers' ratings of students' responses on open-end questions. Wheaton, Neville K. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1977
The author argues the case for having students learn mathematics while developing mathematical models for real situations. Examples of mathematical models and modelling possibilities are given for various fields of interest. (MN)

Yorke, Ellen D. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Demonstrates that if a sinusoidal oscillation of the point of support of a pendulum is approximated by a square wave, a matrix method may be used to discuss parametric resonance and the stability of the inverted pendulum. (Author/SL)

Kauffman, Dan; And Others – Instructional Science, 1976
An equation is derived which predicts the relationship between the subjective information content of written textual material and the relative number of errors committed by a learner when asked to predict, letter by letter, the content of given textual material. (Author)

Rennie, Robert R.; Villegas, C. – Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 1976
An asymptotic theory is developed for a new time series model introduced in TM 502 289. An algorithm for computing estimates of the parameters of this time series model is given, and it is shown that these estimators are asymptotically efficient in that they have the same asymptotic distribution as the maximum likelihood estimators. Katz, David A. – AAUP Bulletin, 1977
A computer program written in BASIC solves earlier problems with a mathematical model used to project the tenure ratio in a time of zero growth in faculty size. It allows the user to input values for the policy variables on a terminal and output the time path of the tenure ratio. (Author/LBH)

Nagel, Stuart; Neef, Marian – Journal of Legal Education, 1977
The use of mathematical models originally developed by economists and operations researchers is described for legal process research. Situations involving plea bargaining, arraignment, and civil liberties illustrate the applicability of decision theory, inventory modeling, and linear programming in operations research. (LBH)

Winter, Gene M. – Community/Junior College Quarterly of Research and Practice, 1987
Presents a rationale and operational guidelines for determining comparable costs for two-year college occupational and technical programs, using production costs of student credit hours and cost center components (e.g., teaching costs, administrative personnel costs, general institutional expenses, federal funds, gifts, grants, and unique program…

Hands, Stephen; Everitt, Brian – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
A Monte Carlo study was made of the recovery of cluster structure in binary data by five hierarchical techniques, with a view to finding which data structure factors influenced recovery and to determining differences between clustering methods with respect to these factors. (LMO)

Losee, Robert M. – Library Quarterly, 1987
Presents a decision theoretic model that minimizes the costs of the material selection decision process by using formal methods to rank materials. Illustrations of the process are provided, and an implementation method using MARC records is described. (Author/CLB)
Descriptors: Decision Making, Evaluation Criteria, Library Expenditures, Library Material Selection

Radecki, Tadeusz – Information Processing and Management, 1988
A theoretical framework used to derive a weighting mechanism for ranking output documents in Boolean retrieval systems is described in detail. A simple illustrative example is included, and the implications of such an approach are discussed. (64 references) (Author/CLB)
