Richardson, James A.; Williams, J. Trent – Journal of Education Finance, 1981
Proposes a method for finding the appropriate level of teacher salaries in different states, based on states' and regions' average fiscal capacities and efforts for instructional salary costs. Applies the method to salary data from all states and compares it to methods based on actual salary levels. (RW)

Stoker, Howard W.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1981
The use of analysis of variance was examined under the assumption that the treatment had been randomly assigned to students, when in fact, the class had been the unit. Data support the idea that if one can randomly assign treatments to intact classes, consideration should certainly be given to doing so. (Author/GK)

Staib, John – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
An approach to using the method of least squares, a scheme for computing the best-fitting line directly from a set of points, is detailed. The material first looks at fitting a numerical value to a set of numbers. This provides tools for solving the line-fitting problem. (MP)

Hadar, N.; Hadass, R. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
Typical difficulties involved in solving combinatorial problems are examined and seven common pitfalls are discussed. (MP)

Stronge, William B.; Schultz, Ronald R. – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1981
A structural model for projecting public school enrollment by grade, program, and district is outlined. Main points of consideration are illustrated by an application to the problem of forecasting enrollment in Florida. (Author/GK)

Watkins, Ann E.; Watkins, William – Mathematics Teacher, 1980
A geometric model used to teach properties of rational numbers to college students is described. (MK)

Bentler, Peter M.; Weeks, David G. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Factor analysis in several populations, covariance structure models, three-mode factor analysis, structural equations systems with measurement model, and analysis of covariance with measurement model are all shown to be specializations of a general moment structure model. Some new structured linear models are also described. (Author/CTM)

Morrison, Donald G.; Brockway, George – Psychometrika, 1979
A modified beta binomial model is presented for use in analyzing random guessing multiple choice tests and taste tests. Detection probabilities for each item are distributed beta across the population subjects. Properties for the observable distribution of correct responses are derived. Two concepts of true score estimates are presented.…

Fowler, George C.; Glorfeld, Louis W. – AEDS Journal, 1981
Explains a model that exploratory research indicates would be of practical value as an aid in counseling students entering introductory computing. (Author/JM)

Zimmerman, Donald W.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
Reliability coefficients of linear combinations of observed scores have anomalous properties which have led to difficulties in the investigation of difference scores and gain scores in test theory. Discrepancies between classical results and correct results obtained from more general formulas, which allow for correlated errors, are examined…

Croft, W. B.; Harper, D. J. – Journal of Documentation, 1979
Retrieval experiments with the Cranfield collection of 1,400 documents used strategies based on a probabilistic model for an initial search and intermediate search when no relevant documents were known. Results show initial strategy is better than conventional strategies in retrieval effectiveness and number of queries needed to retrieve…

Halford, Graeme S.; Wilson, William H. – Cognitive Psychology, 1980
Category theory concept of a commutative diagram was used to construct a model of the way in which symbolic processes are applied to problem solving. It was shown that several different levels of thought can be distinguished within the basic model. Two experiments testing the theory are reported. (Author/RD)

And Others; Takane, Yoshio – Psychometrika, 1980
An individual differences additive model is discussed which represents individual differences in additivity by differential weighting or additive factors. A procedure for estimating model parameters for various data measurement characteristics is developed. The method is found to be very useful in describing certain types of developmental change…

Atteberry, Jim W. – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1979
This study focused on determining the applicability of a mathematical modeling technique (goal programing) to state-level vocational education planning, using Missouri as a test case. Results indicate that such models may help the vocational planner solve problems that cannot be solved by more conventional methods. (SK)

Lawrence, Gary S. – College and Research Libraries, 1981
Presents a simple cost model to analyze trade-offs involved in considering storage and weeding as alternatives to new construction for academic libraries. References are provided, and the Palmour cost model is presented as an appendix. (RAA)
