Merrill, M. David – Instructional Science, 1987
Outlines Component Design Theory, which is based on the author's earlier Component Display Theory, and provides the instructional design guidance needed for experiential computer based instructional systems. Highlights include a contrast between tutorial and experiential instructional models, content structures, consistency rules, instructional…

Broodbooks, Wendy J.; Elmore, Patricia B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
The effects of sample size, number of variables, and population value of the congruence coefficient on the sampling distribution of the congruence coefficient were examined. Sample data were generated on the basis of the common factor model, and principal axes factor analyses were performed. (Author/LMO)

Martin, Allan – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1988
Outlines two traditions in the field of computer simulation, one focusing upon the character of the software within the computer, the other focusing upon the exercise outside the computer which the software is supporting. Topics discussed include mathematical modeling, gaming, information retrieval, decision monitoring, and applications in…

Becker, Henk A. – Simulation and Games, 1988
Describes a project that simulated the impact of three scenarios on health care patterns and the health situation of elderly people in the Netherlands. The discussion covers the utilization of outcomes by policymakers and future applications of simulations by scenario projects. (41 notes with references) (CLB)

Dickman, Frances Baker, Ed. – Evaluation and Program Planning, 1988
Seven papers discuss current issues and applied social research concerning alcohol traffic safety. Prevention, policy input, methodology, planning strategies, anti-drinking/driving programs, social-programmatic orientations of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Kansas Driving Under the Influence Law, New Jersey Driving While Impaired Programs,…

Kennedy, Eugene – Journal of Experimental Education, 1988
Ridge estimates (REs) of population beta weights were compared to ordinary least squares (OLS) estimates through computer simulation to evaluate the use of REs in explanatory research. With fixed predictors, there was some question of the consistency of ridge regression, but with random predictors, REs were superior to OLS. (SLD)

Butler, Richard J.; And Others – Simulation and Games, 1988
Designed to determine whether research in simulation and gaming follows research design methodology and the degree to which research is directed toward learning outcomes measured by Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives, this article examines studies reported in proceedings from the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential…

Alessi, Stephen M. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1988
Discusses the relationship of fidelity and learning in computer simulation. Highlights include a review of previous research; a discussion of transfer of learning; a taxonomy for fidelity analysis with four different types of computer-based instructional simulations; and implications for instructional design and research. (41 references)…

Reese, L. Grant; And Others – CALICO Journal, 1988
Utah State University's intensive Spanish program uses video simulations of real-life experiences as the basis for classroom instruction in lieu of following a textbook, allowing the class to become student-centered, rather than instructor-centered, through a problem-solving group endeavor. (Author/CB)

Taylor, Elenor – Update on Law-Related Education, 1988
Presents materials necessary for conducting a mock disposition hearing in which students learn how courts deal with wayward and neglected juveniles. Intended to illustrate the problems that courts face in dealing with minors, the materials include activity instructions and a mock probation report to be used in the simulation. (GEA)

Robertson, Douglas Frederick – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Described is a computer simulation that was used to help general education students enrolled in a large introductory geology course. The purpose of the simulation is to learn to interpret incomplete data. Students design a plan to collect bathymetric data for an area of the ocean. Procedures used by the students and instructor are included.…

Teel, Steven – Social Studies Review, 1988
This article provides a five day unit for secondary students which demonstrates how limited information influences U.S. foreign policy decisions. Students assume roles as presidential advisors recommending actions among three imaginary foreign countries and the United States. (JDH)

Mecklenburger, James A. – Phi Delta Kappan, 1988
Compares David Kearns' resentment of school performance (in the same "Kappan" issue) to the author's own frustration with Xerox photocopiers. To achieve the restructuring and choice central to Kearns' educational recovery plan, the schools will need to depend increasingly on technology (computer simulations, interactive video, and…

Vlahakis, Robert – Computing Teacher, 1988
Reviews a classroom experience which used the computer simulation "Decisions, Decisions: Immigration" in a secondary school social studies class. Highlights include descriptions of the decision making process, rank ordering of priorities, political and social issues relating to immigration, and benefits of teaching the simulation. (LRW)

McKenna, Michael C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1986
The purpose of this study was to test a specific hypothesis with regard to how cloze retrieval takes place once semantic constraints are recognized. Results from human subjects and computer simulation suggested that increase in latency between the two- and three-semantic-constraint conditions was not artifactual. (JAZ)
