Peer reviewedCohen, Jacob; Nee, John C. M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
The analysis of contingency tables via set correlation allows the assessment of subhypotheses involving contrast functions of the categories of the nominal scales. The robustness of such methods with regard to Type I error and statistical power was studied via a Monte Carlo experiment. (TJH)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Monte Carlo Methods, Multivariate Analysis, Power (Statistics)
Peer reviewedCurry, Bruce; Moutinho, Luiz – Management Education and Development, 1992
Computer simulation is an ideal framework to encourage decision making, active learning, and motivation. Appropriate software should be judged in terms of realism, relevance, complexity, interface, administrative efficiency, and use of microcomputers. (SK)
Descriptors: Business Administration Education, Computer Simulation, Computer Software, Higher Education
Bergland, Mark – Bioscene, 1994
Describes step-by-step techniques that can be used to develop educational simulations for undergraduate biology students. Also discussed are simulations that are currently being developed with the support of the National Science Foundation. (ZWH)
Descriptors: Biology, Computer Simulation, Computer Uses in Education, Higher Education
Peer reviewedAlexander, Ralph A.; Govern, Diane M. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1994
A new approximation is proposed for testing the equality of "k" independent means in the face of heterogeneity of variance. Monte Carlo simulations show that the new procedure has nearly nominal Type I error rates and Type II error rates that are close to those produced by James's second-order approximation. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Computer Simulation, Equations (Mathematics), Monte Carlo Methods
Peer reviewedSnijders, Tom A. B. – Psychometrika, 1991
A complete enumeration method and a Monte Carlo method are presented to calculate the probability distribution of arbitrary statistics of adjacency matrices when these matrices have the uniform distribution conditional on given row and column sums, and possibly on a given set of structural zeros. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Equations (Mathematics), Mathematical Models, Matrices
Peer reviewedCritchlow, Douglas E.; Fligner, Michael A. – Psychometrika, 1991
A variety of paired comparison, triple comparison, and ranking experiments are discussed as generalized linear models. All such models can be easily fit by maximum likelihood using the GLIM computer package. Examples are presented for a variety of cases using GLIM. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Computer Simulation, Computer Software, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedPlutchik, Robert; Karasu, Toksoz B. – Computers in Human Behavior, 1991
Reviews the literature dealing with the role of computers in psychiatric interviewing, and with the role of the computer as a patient or as a therapist. Efforts to develop forms of computer-assisted therapy are described, and implications for the mental health field are suggested. (40 references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Interviews, Literature Reviews, Mental Health Programs
Peer reviewedPerry, C.; Delahaye, B. – Higher Education Research and Development, 1990
A study of the effects of team roles on the success of teams in business simulations found, contrary to expectation, that teams analyzing data on the basis of beliefs and values rather than logic were more successful. Implications for use of simulation in management education are discussed. (Author/MSE)

Peer reviewedRasmussen, Jeffrey Lee; Dunlap, William P. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
Results of a Monte Carlo study with 4 populations (3,072 conditions) indicate that when distributions depart markedly from normality, nonparametric analysis and parametric analysis of transformed data show superior power to parametric analysis of raw data. Under conditions studied, parametric analysis of transformed data is more powerful than…

Peer reviewedCudahy, Edward; Link, H. Cynthia – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
A computerized hearing aid measurement system using simulated input and output compression hearing aids was compared to a manual technique using conventional laboratory instrumentation. Results matched closely, but the computer system was considerably more flexible and easier to use. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Audiology, Computer Assisted Testing, Equipment Evaluation, Hearing Aids
Peer reviewedKates, James M. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
This paper discusses the problem of feedback in hearing aids and offers examples based on a computer simulation of hearing aid behavior. The available technology for dealing with feedback is reviewed, and the new digital signal-processing approaches which may finally solve the feedback problem are described. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Audiology, Computers, Equipment Evaluation
Peer reviewedMunro, Allen; Towne, Douglas M. – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1992
Discusses model-based simulation for training, explains an object-oriented approach, and describes RAPIDS, an authoring system for the production of interactive graphical models and instruction based on those models. Highlights include intelligent tutoring systems; transaction shells; tools for authoring models; and a course on retinal information…
Descriptors: Authoring Aids (Programing), Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Simulation
Peer reviewedZimmerman, Donald W.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
Coefficient alpha was examined through computer simulation as an estimate of test reliability under violation of two assumptions. Coefficient alpha underestimated reliability under violation of the assumption of essential tau-equivalence of subtest scores and overestimated it under violation of the assumption of uncorrelated subtest error scores.…

Peer reviewedHartigan, John M. – CD-ROM Professional, 1993
Gives an overview of the development of multimedia, from the combination of film and computer graphics used during the 1960s to present day jet aircraft simulators. Definitions of multimedia, virtual reality, the use of compact disks to deliver digitally recorded information, and the economic need for the technology are discussed. (KRN)

Peer reviewedFava, Joseph L.; Velicer, Wayne F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Effects of overextracting factors and components within and between maximum likelihood factor analysis and principal components analysis were examined through computer simulation of a range of factor and component patterns. Results demonstrate similarity of component and factor scores during overextraction. Overall, results indicate that…
