Maier, Mark H. – Journal of Economic Education, 2002
Reviews "Learning from the Market: Integrating 'The Stock Market Game' across the Curriculum" guide for teachers in grades 4 to 12. Believes the guide suffers from errors of fact and omission. Suggests corrections and alternative activities that enable instructors to continue to use the material. (JEH)

Mislevy, Robert J.; Steinberg, Linda S.; Breyer, F. Jay; Almond, Russell G.; Johnson, Lynn – Applied Measurement in Education, 2002
Presents a design framework that incorporates integrated structures for modeling knowledge and skills, designing tasks, and extracting and synthesizing evidence. Illustrates these ideas in the context of a project that assesses problem solving in dental hygiene through computer-based simulations. (SLD)

Jansen-Osmann, Petra – Computers in Human Behavior, 2002
Discusses research in spatial cognition that uses computer-simulated three dimensional environments and evaluates the use of virtual desktop environments by replicating an experiment which was formerly done in a laboratory or real world setting. Investigates the role of landmarks when acquiring route knowledge in a system of paths. (Author/LRW)

Leung, Chi-Keung; Chang, Hua-Hua; Hau, Kit-Tai – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2003
Studied three stratification designs for computerized adaptive testing in conjunction with three well-developed content balancing methods. Simulation study results show substantial differences in item overlap rate and pool utilization among different methods. Recommends an optimal combination of stratification design and content balancing method.…

McLeod, Lori; Lewis, Charles; Thissen, David – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2003
Explored procedures to detect test takers using item preknowledge in computerized adaptive testing and suggested a Bayesian posterior log odds ratio index for this purpose. Simulation results support the use of the odds ratio index. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Bayesian Statistics, Computer Assisted Testing, Knowledge Level

Nechyba, Thomas J. – National Tax Journal, 2003
Synthesizes lessons from school finance research that employs computational structural models to investigate different policy proposals. Suggests that full equilibrium analysis may lead to outcomes that differ from those predicted by partial equilibrium models. (Contains 50 references and 47 notes.) (JOW)
Descriptors: Economic Factors, Educational Finance, Models, Policy Formation

Bohrer, Julie A. – American Biology Teacher, 1997
Describes an activity that would be useful for any level biology class discussing recombinant DNA technology to help students visualize the step-by-step process involved. (JRH)

Caruso, John C.; Cliff, Norman – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1997
Several methods of constructing confidence intervals for Spearman's rho (rank correlation coefficient) (C. Spearman, 1904) were tested in a Monte Carlo study using 2,000 samples of 3 different sizes. Results support the continued use of Spearman's rho in behavioral research. (SLD)

Stephens, Matthew P. – Journal of Technology Studies, 1997
Describes advances in and advantages of computer simulation in education and industry. Gives examples from health care and waste handling industries and technology education classrooms. (SK)

Liu, Lili; And Others – Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, 1997
In one seminar, 39 occupational and 34 physical therapy students interacted with a simulated patient; in another, they viewed a videotape of a simulated patient and clinician. Student identification of patient problems tended to agree with experts in the first seminar; more student treatment plans agreed with experts in the video seminar. (SK)

Hulme, Sarah; Mitchell, Peter; Wood, David – Cognition, 2003
Four experiments examined 6-year-olds' performance on intentionality stories and one false belief story. Children answered according to their own knowledge in an intentional context, even though they responded by choosing a picture to insert into a protagonist's thought bubble rather than reporting the belief verbally. Children could correctly…

van Onna, M. J. H. – Psychometrika, 2002
Studied whether ordered latent class models can be used as nonparametric item response theory (NIRT) models to scale polytomous models. Simulation findings show that the Bayesian estimation method presented can handle the inequality restrictions on the parameters and the sparseness of the data quite well. (SLD)
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Item Response Theory

Winn, William – Technology, Instruction, Cognition and Learning, 2003
Forms a conceptual framework for studying learning in artificial environments, i.e. computer-supported simulations of natural environments. Discusses the ideas that cognition is embodied in physical activity, that this activity is embedded in a learning environment, and that learning is the result of adaptation of the learner to the environment…

Milam, Donna M. – Public Administration Review, 2003
A local government administrator used her work experiences to create simulation exercises for public administration students. Advantages that such practitioners bring to the classroom include "inside" information, organizational management skills, budget knowledge, and the ability to provide networking opportunities for students.
