Berlin, Donna F.; White, Arthur L. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1987
The design, selection, and organization of instructional materials that integrate calculators are described in relation to a model based on movement and representational level. Instructional resources and advantages of the model are described. (MNS)
Descriptors: Calculators, Curriculum Development, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Anderson, James C.; Gerbing, David W. – Psychometrika, 1984
This study of maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis found effects of practical significance due to sample size, the number of indicators per factor, and the number of factors for Joreskog and Sorbom's (1981) goodness-of-fit index (GFI), GFI adjusted for degrees of freedom, and the root mean square residual. Liberatore, Matthew J.; Titus, George J. – Journal of the Society of Research Administrators, 1986
The use of quantitative techniques for research and development management in large U.S. industrial firms is reviewed, current patterns of technique familiarity and usage are described, and suggestions for the direction of project management systems are given. (MSE)
Descriptors: Budgeting, Industry, Mathematical Models, Methods

Langford, Peter E. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
An alternative explanation is presented for the pattern of relative difficulty of arithmetical word problems to that suggested in a 1983 article. It is argued, that for many problems, much of the symbolic manipulation is accomplished externally, not internally. (MNS)

Birdsall, Nancy; Meesook, Oey Astra – Economics of Education Review, 1986
Data from the 1970 Brazilian Census are used to explore the effects of parents' investments in their children's education on the pattern of future income distribution and on the intergenerational transmission of inequality, using a simulation model. Appended are 21 references. (Author)

O'Shea, Thomas – Mathematics Teacher, 1986
An example of how geometry serves as a model in the real world is outlined, with suggestions on how it might be used at the high school level. (MNS)
Descriptors: Geography, Geometric Concepts, Learning Activities, Mathematical Applications

Phillips, S. E. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
Rasch model equatings of multilevel achievement test data before and after the deletion of misfitting persons were compared. Rasch equatings were also compared with an equating obtained using the equipercentile method. No basis could be found in the results for choosing between the two Rasch equatings. (Author/LMO)

Baroody, Arthur J. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Mastering the basic number combinations involves discovering, labeling, and internalizing relationships, not merely drill-based memorization. Counting procedures and thinking strategies are components, and it may be that using stored procedures, rules, or principles to quickly construct combinations is cognitively more economical than relying…

Ashcraft, Mark H. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
The author first corrects Baroody's description of the network retrieval model for basic number facts, in which facts are stored in memory and retrieved as needed. He then indicates weaknesses in Baroody's argument. (MNS)

Anderson, O. Roger; Callaway, J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
An empirical analysis of the relationship between science reasoning skills and the amount of information acquired during science learning as predicted by a neuromathematical model of information processing is presented. Subjects were 93 adolescents (mean age of 15.4 years old) with a IQ range of 91-142. (Author/JN)

Dagenais, Denyse L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
After a review of the disadvantages of linear models for estimating the probability of academic success from previous school records and admission test results, the use of a probit model is proposed. The model is illustrated with admissions data from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Montreal. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Admission (School), Admission Criteria, Dropout Rate, Estimation (Mathematics)
Hill, Peter W. – Evaluation in Education: An International Review Series, 1984
Building on Bloom's, and subsequent educational taxonomies, a larger, synthetic, theoretical basis, called the process hierarchy theory, is developed. Its relationship to general systems theory and its metatheoretical context are described. A general methodology for empirically testing aspects of the theory using mathematical modeling is explored.…

Baroody, Arthur J. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1984
A model of subtraction development and the computing difficulties and research issues suggested by the model are outlined. Demands of simultaneous processes, difficulties with informal subtraction, and the impact on the counting-up procedure are discussed. (MNS)

Davison, Mark L. – Psychometrika, 1976
Proposes a quadratic programming, least squares solution to Carroll's weighted unfolding model with nonnegativity constraints imposed on weights. It can be used to test various hypotheses about the weighted unfolding model with or without constraints. (RC)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Correlation, Goodness of Fit, Hypothesis Testing
