In a study of 86 individuals with mental retardation, participants were asked to identify the appropriate facial expression or word that corresponded to the emotional response in a vignette. Ability estimates obtained from applying finite state score theory, item response models, and classical test theory to score multiple-choice items were compared using responses of 1,230 examinees.
