Roznowski, Mary; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
A Monte Carlo investigation of simplex fitting as a method of determining the dimensionality of binary data matrices was conducted. Examination of the fit of correlation matrices with a known factor structure to correlation matrices that represent the perfect simplex shows that simplex fitting is a feasible approach under some circumstances. (SLD)

Kline, Frank M.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1991
This study found that special education teachers (n=18) effectively integrated two feedback routines into their teaching: a teacher-delivered elaborated feedback routine and an elaborated feedback plus student-acceptance routine. The routines were equally powerful in reducing the number of trials to mastery for students with learning disabilities.…

Baker, Frank B.; Al-Karni, Ali – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1991
Two methods of computing test equating coefficients under item response theory by the following authors are compared: (1) B. H. Loyd and H. D. Hoover (1980); and (2) M. L. Stocking and F. M. Lord (1983). Conditions under which the method of Stocking and Lord is preferable are described. (SLD)

Gitomer, Drew H.; Yamamoto, Kentaro – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1991
A model integrating latent trait and latent class theories in characterizing individual performance on the basis of qualitative understanding is presented. This HYBRID model is illustrated through experiments with 119 Air Force technicians taking a paper-and-pencil test and 136 Air Force technicians taking a computerized test. (SLD)

Blumberg, Samuel H.; Izard, Carroll E. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1991
Examined the relations between emotion and facial expressions of emotion in 8- to 12-year-old male psychiatric patients. Results indicated that patterns or combinations of emotion experiences had an impact on facial expressions of emotion. (Author/BB)

Hansen, Jane – New Advocate, 1991
Interviews elementary children about their fiction writing to gain a glimpse into how writing teachers might improve their teaching. Found the following three features in students' growing knowledge of characters: characters can elicit readers' empathy, can change the attitude of the readers, and can have a mind of their own. (MG)

O'Brien, Kathy L. – New Advocate, 1991
Describes 12 successful practices for literature programs which evolved as students and teachers talked about books. Finds that these practices minimize the basalization of literature and maximize the analysis of and dialogue about literature. (MG)

Jeng, Ling Hwey – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991
Reports on a study of 203 title pages as the source of information for descriptive cataloging, and bibliographic data on title pages as written artifacts having their own visual characteristics. Frame structure representations at various levels of abstraction are suggested for a prototype title page, and expert systems for descriptive cataloging…

McCormick, Sandra – Reading Research Quarterly, 1992
Determines the incidence, distribution, and relationships of various error types when disabled readers responded to inference questions based on narrative and expository selections. Finds greater proportions of errors in three of the seven categories: integration of text and prior information, ability to write intended responses, and recall of…

Nielsen, A. Brian; Beauchamp, Larry – Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, 1992
A study examined the effect of conceptual kinesiology training on the feedback patterns of preservice physical educators who, before and after training, viewed videotapes of familiar and novel skills then provided corrective feedback. Training resulted in significant increases in the corrective, accurate trial-specific feedback for both skills.…

Albert, James H. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
Estimating item parameters from a two-parameter normal ogive model is considered using Gibbs sampling to simulate draws from the joint posterior distribution of ability and item parameters. The method gives marginal posterior density estimates for any parameter of interest, as illustrated using data from a 33-item mathematics placement…

Roberts, Donald F. – Teachers College Record, 1993
Discusses the effect of the mass media, particularly the influence of violence and sex, on adolescents, noting the paucity of research on the subject. The article recommends a compromise between censorship and free expression. It examines how teachers and parents can help by discussing media messages with students. (SM)

Matias, Reinaldo; Cohn, Jeffrey F. – Developmental Psychology, 1993
Examined infant facial expressions at two, four, and six months of age during face-to-face play and a still-face interaction with their mothers. Contrary to differential emotions theory, at no age did proportions or durations of discrete and blended negative expressions differ; they also showed different patterns of developmental change. (MM)

Luecht, Richard M.; Miller, Timothy R. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
A two-stage process that considers the multidimensionality of tests under the framework of unidimensional item response theory is described and evaluated. Findings from a simulation indicate that gains in estimation robustness and score interpretation are possible with almost no sacrifice of goodness of fit when using this two-stage approach. (SLD)

Allerton, Mark – International Journal of Early Childhood, 1992
Discusses importance of adults asking questions that encourage development of children's expressive language. Compared the responses of 4- to 5-year olds asked only closed questions with those of children asked verbal reflective questions in which the questioner restated part of the child's previous utterance. Found that closed questions generated…
