Peer reviewedCarroll, Pamela S. – English Journal, 1994
Details the experiences of one teacher researcher who observed an 11th-grade English class over the course of a year. Describes the changes initiated by the teacher, along with their mixed results. Analyzes the student response to such innovations as writing workshops and shared interpretations of texts. (HB)
Descriptors: Classroom Research, English Curriculum, English Instruction, Reader Response
Peer reviewedHorne, Arthur M.; And Others – Contemporary Education, 1994
Teachers need an appreciation for and empathetic understanding of their students, and they require tools for intervening when students have behavior problems or fail to demonstrate effective living skills in school. They must also have the courage to expect students to learn, grow, and live up to classroom standards. (SM)
Descriptors: Behavior Problems, Classroom Environment, Classroom Techniques, Discipline
Peer reviewedKelderman, Henk; Rijkes, Carl P. M. – Psychometrika, 1994
A loglinear item response theory (IRT) model is proposed that relates polytomously scored item responses to a multidimensional latent space. The analyst may specify a response function for each response, and each item may have a different number of response categories. Conditional maximum likelihood estimates are derived. (SLD)

Watkins, Beverly T. – Chronicle of Higher Education, 1992
At Carnegie Mellon University, interactive videodisks are used to create real-world moral dilemmas in the classroom for students studying ethics, values, and critical thinking. The medium combines the power of film with the control of the computer, but production of materials can be time consuming and difficult. (MSE)
Descriptors: Change Strategies, Critical Thinking, Educational Change, Emotional Response
Peer reviewedFerguson, Tamara J.; And Others – Child Development, 1991
Children's conceptions of the emotions of guilt versus shame were investigated in 2 studies involving children ages 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. Age-related differences in conceptions of guilt and shame emerged. The older children understood the adaptive implications of both emotions, whereas the younger children perceived them more in terms of the…

Peer reviewedCook, Linda L.; Eignor, Daniel R. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1991
This paper provides the basis for understanding score equating through item response theory (IRT). Theoretical justifications and practical advantages of IRT true-score test procedures are discussed. Three steps in the equating process are specified, and a self-test is included. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equated Scores, Equations (Mathematics), Item Response Theory, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedMcLaughlin, T. F. – Journal of Educational Research, 1992
Written feedback, placed on five students' reading assignments, was evaluated in a multiple baseline design across students. The outcomes indicated improved accuracy in reading when the feedback was provided by the teacher. Differences between previous research and the present study are discussed. (AMH)
Descriptors: Behavior Problems, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Feedback
Peer reviewedShealy, Robin; Stout, William – Psychometrika, 1993
A model-based modification of the standardization index based on a multidimensional item response theory bias modeling approach is presented that detects and estimates differential item functioning (DIF) (item bias) simultaneously for several items as well as differential test functioning (DTF). This SIBTEST procedure is tested through a computer…

Cohen, Y.; Norst, M. J. – RELC Journal: A Journal of Language Teaching and Research in Southeast Asia, 1989
The attitudes of Australian adults required to study a foreign language for a postgraduate degree were examined. Investigators reviewed the students' diaries, which they had been required to keep for 30 lessons. Problems of fear/anxiety, dependence, and loss of self-esteem are discussed. (17 references) (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Adult Students, Anxiety, Attitude Measures, Emotional Response
Peer reviewedKingsbury, G. Gage; Houser, Ronald L. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1993
The utility of item response theory (IRT) models in computerized adaptive tests is considered. Measurement questions that have been answered using IRT, and those that might be overlooked because of IRT, are reviewed. Areas in which fuller use of IRT could improve adaptive testing practices are identified. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Computer Assisted Testing, Educational Assessment, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedFabes, Richard A.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1993
Measured the facial expressions, heart rate variability (HRV), and skin conductance of 37 third graders and 29 sixth graders while they viewed a film about a distressed child. Found that high HRV was predictive of children's sympathetic rather than distressed reactions and that, for boys, sympathetic responsiveness positively predicted a…

Peer reviewedNeel, Richard S.; Cessna, K. Kay – Rural Special Education Quarterly, 1993
Suggests that student problem behaviors are best addressed through instruction; teacher-student interactions are the best arena for teaching social behaviors; and problem behaviors have the same social ends as desirable ones. Outlines steps for analyzing the child's desired outcome of problem behaviors, choosing replacement behaviors, and planning…
Descriptors: Behavior Change, Behavior Problems, Change Strategies, Educational Strategies
Peer reviewedRothgery, David – College Composition and Communication, 1993
Considers how writing teachers, when faced with student writing that betrays sexist, racist, or homophobic sentiments, should respond. Addresses the difficulty of asserting moral imperatives in the light of current antifoundationalist theory. Argues for a reliance on a "necessary directionality" toward comprehensive moral truths. (HB)
Descriptors: English Instruction, Higher Education, Postmodernism, Racial Bias
Peer reviewedLeong, Frederick T. L.; Zachar, Peter – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1991
Presents three studies on development of Scientist-Practitioner Inventory (SPI) designed to measure career specialty interests of psychology students. Reports factorial validity of scales, test-retest reliability, freedom from response-set biases, and construct validity; cross-validation evidence of second-order factor structure, internal…

Peer reviewedBoekkooi-Timminga, Ellen – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
A new test construction model based on the Rasch model is proposed. This model, the cluster-based method, considers groups of interchangeable items rather than individual items and uses integer programing. Results for six test construction problems indicate that the method produces accurate results in small amounts of time. (SLD)
