Nandakumar, Ratna – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
The methodology of P. E. Holland and P. R. Rosenbaum (1986) to assess unidimensionality of binary data is outlined and illustrated through a simulation with 36 items for 2,000 examinees. How to interpret the results is discussed. (SLD)

Hanson, Bradley A. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1991
The formula developed by R. Levine (1955) for equating unequally reliable tests is described. The formula can be interpreted as a method of moments estimate of an equating function that results in first order equity of the equated test score under a classical congeneric model. (TJH)

Gibbons, Jean D.; Chakraborti, S. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1991
A simulation study compared the performance of the Mann-Whitney "U" test, Student's "t" test, and the alternate (separate variance) "t" test for two mutually independent random samples from normal distributions, with both one-tailed and two-tailed alternatives. Type I error probabilities were computed with equal and…

Zajonc, R. B.; And Others – American Sociological Review, 1991
Responds to "Birth Order and Intelligence: Further Tests of the Confluence Model" by Robert D. Retherford and William H. Sewell. Reviews their arguments and suggests that their analyses of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study data support rather than contradict the model. (CJS)

Wothke, Werner; Browne, Michael W. – Psychometrika, 1990
The composite direct-product model for the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix is reparamaterized as a second-order factor analysis model. This process facilitates the use of widely available computer programs--LISREL and LISCOMP--for fitting the model. If bounds on phi and theta are not imposed to avoid inadmissible values, convergence problems…

Nandakumar, Ratna – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
The capability of the DIMTEST statistical test in assessing essential unidimensionality of item responses to real tests was investigated for 22 real tests of at least 25 items and 700 or more examinees. DIMTEST results on real tests were able to discriminate between essentially unidimensional and multidimensional tests. (SLD)

Smith, D. N. – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 1997
Argues that a major difficulty in learning how to do mathematical modeling is in the first independent run through the modeling cycle. Reviews a case study (N=12) on mathematical modeling and presents the conclusions in three sections: (1) the choice of task; (2) the presentation of the task; and (3) tutor intervention and support. (ASK)

Morland, Tim – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 1999
Provides an example of the modeling power of Mathematics, demonstrated in a piece of A-Level student coursework which was undertaken as part of the MEI Structured Mathematics scheme. A system of two masses and two springs oscillating in one dimension is found to be accurately modeled by a system of linear differential equations. (Author/ASK)

Huynh, Huynh – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1998
Presents a procedure, based on a Bayesian updating of the item information, for locating on the latent trait scale the scores or responses of items that follow the three-parameter logistic and monotone partial credit models. Applications are provided in terms of selecting items or score categories for criterion-referenced interpretation of mapping…

Levin, Harry M.; Driver, Cyrus E. – Education Economics, 1997
Suggests a framework for estimating the costs associated with shifting from the traditional method of financing and administering U.S. public schools to an educational voucher system. Uses certain framework components to compute "ballpark" estimates in five cost areas: accommodating additional students, record keeping, student…

Baker, Bruce D. – Economics of Education Review, 2001
Explores whether flexible nonlinear models (including neural networks and genetic algorithms) can reveal otherwise unexpected patterns of relationship in typical school-productivity data. Applying three types of algorithms alongside regression modeling to school-level data in 183 elementary schools proves the hypothesis and reveals new directions…

Houston, S. Kenneth – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 1997
Suggests that mathematical modeling is "a way of life for everyone." Describes the M's of mathematics which include methods, models, and modeling; and the R's of mathematics which are reasoning, reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic. Outlines their role in promoting "the way of life" and discusses implications for the 16-19 curriculum. (Author/ASK)

Strauss, Shiela M.; Rindskopf, David M.; Falkin, Gregory P. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2001
Used empirical data about HIV risk behaviors from 330 female participants in a drug treatment program to explore the implications and consequences of using various statistical models to describe the association of one ordinal and one dichotomous variable in which data are incomplete for the dichotomous variable. Examined the statistical fit and…

Gravemeijer, Koeno – Mathematical Thinking and Learning, 1999
Addresses the role that so-called emergent models can play in the process of constituting formal mathematics. Describes how the use of these models became more explicated over time and developed into the notion of emergent models. Uses the design of instructional sequence for flexible mental strategies for addition and subtraction as an example…

Lawson, D. A.; Tabor, J. H. – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 2001
Explores the derivation of empirical models for the stopping distance of a car being driven at a range of speeds. Indicates that the calculation of stopping distances makes an excellent example of empirical modeling because it is a situation that is readily understood and particularly relevant to many first-year undergraduates who are learning or…
