Surveyed patients and families who used hotline emergency service in ambulatory day treatment center for frail elderly. Results revealed appropriate use of service: Most calls required medical intervention, including hospitalization in 31 percent of cases. Analyzed health care use in four years prior to death for 4,256 elderly decedents. Found hospital bed use by nursing home residents declined with age and was much lower than for decedents in community.
