The hypothesis that a person stutters because he believes in the difficulty of speech, anticipates failure, and struggles to avoid it, is said to be consistent with experimental findings on the metronome effect, the adaptation effect, the effects of white noise and delayed auditory feedback, and operant control of stuttering.
