Almy, John – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An experiment that relies entirely on NMR signal counting and polarimetric properties to identify an unknown aldohexose, aldopentose, or ketohexose, is developed. The experiment is adaptable to instructional approaches that allow students to develop identification strategies on their own.

De Persis, Stephanie; Dollet, Alain; Teyssandier, Francis – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
It is presented that only simple concepts, mainly taken from activated-complex or transition-state theory, are required to explain and analytically describe the influence of pressure on gas-phase reaction kinetics. The simplest kind of elementary gas-phase reaction is a unimolecular decomposition reaction.

Andrews, Steven S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The mathematics behind the average absorption cross-section is exactly one third of the maximum value described. The goal is to calculate experimental observables, or other properties of bulk sample, in terms of microscopic molecular parameters.

Watson, Tanya T.; Uffelman, Erich S.; Lee, Daniel W., III; Doherty, Jonathan R.; Schulze, Carl; Burke, Amy L.; Bonnema, Kristen, R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The microscale preparation, characterization, and reactivity of a square planar Co(III) complex that has grown out of a program to introduce experiments of relevance to green chemistry into the undergraduate curriculum is presented. The given experiments illustrate the remarkable redox and aqueous acid-base stability that make the macrocycles very…

Stocksdale, Mark G; Pointer, Roy D; Benson, Barret W.; Fletcher, Steven E. S.; Henry, Ian; Ogren, Paul J.; Berg, Michael A. G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A two-step oxidation-reduction sequence that incorporates several important aspects of synthesis into introductory organic chemistry laboratories is described. This experiment is an excellent vehicle for introducing elements of discovery and intermediate yield improvement strategies.

Thompson, Jonathan E.; Ting, Jason – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The construction of a simple and inexpensive water-jacketed cuvette for the Spectronic 20 is described. This cuvette is utilized to determine the activation energy of the reaction between crystal violet and hydroxide ion spectrophotomerically.

Kocijancic, Slavko; O'Sullivan, Colm – Physics Education, 2004
Modern low-cost data acquisition systems enable pupils to study the voltage-current characteristics of a wide range of different materials and devices in a quick and convenient way. In particular, it is possible to study materials, such as meat and vegetables, not normally associated with school physics experiments.

Keeports, David – Physics Education, 2005
Reflection of light by a convex Fresnel lens gives rise to two distinct images. A highly convex inverted real reflective image forms on the object side of the lens, while an upright virtual reflective image forms on the opposite side of the lens. I describe here a set of laser experiments performed upon a Fresnel lens. These experiments provide…

Art, Albert – Physics Education, 2006
A model lift containing a figure of Albert Einstein is released from the side of a tall building and its free fall is arrested by elastic ropes. This arrangement allows four simple experiments to be conducted in the lift to demonstrate the effects of free fall and show how they can lead to the concept of the equivalence of inertial and…

Dwyer, Tammy J.; Fillo, Jeremiah D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
The analytical system to teach the subtleties of assaying alpha-dicarbonyl compounds in wine is described. Spectrophotometry is determined to be minimally useful in the experiment where the GC-MS (methyglyoxal) method proved to be ideal to confirm that the compounds analyzed in the wine samples were indeed the glyoxals based on the formation of…

Volkov, Victor; Pfister, Rolf – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The electronic properties of Cu(II) complex with proline are considered to demonstrate the Cotton effect in the visible region. A series of experiments in optical rotatory dispersion spectroscopy with free D- and L-proline and their complexes with the Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution is suggested.

Trofimenko, Swiatoslaw – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
Scorpionate-type ligands and the original polypyrazolylborates are easy to synthesize, have good stability, and are quite user-friendly. Their thallium(I) salts are readily soluble in organic solvents that permits their use in organic media, or in two-phase aquo-organic solvent mixtures.

Seeman, Jeffrey I. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The chemical and physical properties of nicotine and its carboxylic acid salts found in tobacco provided as an interesting example to understand basic principles of complex science. The result showed that the experimental data used were inconsistent to the conclusion made, and the transfer of nicotine smoke from tobacco to smoke cannot be…

Basey, John; Sacket, Loren; Robinson, Natalie – International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 2008
Variations in science lab design can differentially impact student learning. Quantification of these differential impacts can be used in modeling--an approach we term "optimal lab design." In this study we estimated relative influences of six characteristics of lab design on students' attitudes toward science labs in three different…
