Examined adjustment following physical disability using the representative case method with two persons with quadriplegia. Results highlighted the importance of previously established coping styles as well as the role of the environment in adjustment. Willingness to mourn aided in later growth. (JAC)

Tested 73 male inpatients with coronary heart disease on the Defense Mechanisms Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a perception of health measure. Subjects were followed for five years. Principalization was discovered to be the most successful and projection the least successful defense. (JAC)

Describes the development of an automatic referral system (Autorf) on an inpatient alcohol and day unit (N=150). Preliminary results with regard to the validity of the Autorf system are reported. Implications for treatment of alcoholics and program efficiency are discussed. (JAC)

Assessed the attitudes of 59 maternity patients toward the use of a computer for psychological testing. Results showed patients were almost unanimous in finding the computer acceptable and easy to use, and most would be willing to use the computer again. (JAC)

Linehan, Marsha M.; Laffaw, Julie A. – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 1982
Compared suicidal behaviors among two populations in the same geographical area: clients at a psychology clinic versus individuals from the general population. In both samples, 10 percent of the individuals reported prior parasuicidal behavior; the two populations were also quite similar on reports of prior suicidal ideation. (JAC)

The results of this study showed no significant differences in the size estimation levels of acute and chronic schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic psychiatric patients. Also, there were no significant differences when these groups were subdivided on the basis of both premorbid adjustment and paranoid status. (Author/CG)
