Hipple, John – 1997
Incidence of anxiety among musicians has been investigated mostly among classical players and music students. This paper determines that any intervention requires a comprehensive understanding of the primary problem. The presentation of music performance anxiety varies from individual to individual with many possible sources of origin as well as…

Peer reviewedPrior, Daniel W.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1983
Assessed the relative efficacy of EMG biofeedback training to reduce tension levels in students (N=55) characterized by the presence or absence of coronary-prone behavior pattern (Type A or Type B). Results showed biofeedback students attained and maintained greater relaxation during training than did controls, regardless of A/B status. (WAS)

Barnea, A.; Rassis, A.; Zaidel, E. – Brain and Cognition, 2005
We applied SMR/theta neurofeedback (NF) training at central sites of 20 Israeli children aged 10-12 years, half boys and half girls. Half of the subjects received C3 training and the other half C4 training, consisting of 20 half-hour sessions. We assessed the effects of training on lateralized lexical decision in Hebrew. The lateralized lexical…

Stankus, Tony – Behavioral & Social Sciences Librarian, 2008
Psychologists, social workers, and school counselors are increasingly adding neurofeedback (NFT), a controversial alternative or complementary therapy to their treatment plans for patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. NFT involves training the patient in self-regulation of brain wave patterns, employing a standard diagnostic…

Cavanagh, Peter R., Ed. – 1990
Contributions from researchers in the field of running mechanics are included in the 13 chapters of this book. The following topics are covered: (1) "The Mechanics of Distance Running: A Historical Perspective" (Peter Cavanagh); (2) "Stride Length in Distance Running: Velocity, Body Dimensions, and Added Mass Effects" (Peter Cavanagh, Rodger…

Hines, Stephen J. – 1982
The purpose of this study was to measure and analyze viewers' electroencephalographic reactions to motion and still pictures, and to increase knowledge on the differential impact of the two modes on brain wave production. Since beta brain wave indicates focused attention, an additional purpose was to determine whether the two media differed…

Peer reviewedCalamari, John E.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1987
A specific progressive muscle relaxation training procedure was combined with auditory electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback, modeling, and reinforcement procedures to teach relaxation skills to 32 mentally retarded adults. The procedure was effective in reducing subjects' EMG levels and activity levels. Intellectual and adaptive behavior levels…

Peer reviewedKeefe, Francis J.; Gil, Karen M. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986
Reviews behavioral and psychological concepts currently applied to the assessment and treatment of chronic pain syndromes, including operant conditioning and psychophysiologic concepts such as the stress-pain hypothesis, the pain-muscle spasm-pain cycle, and the neuromuscular pain model. Discusses relaxation and biofeedback training and concepts…

Peer reviewedKarnes, Frances A.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Investigated the relationship between biofeedback and tension as measured by an electromyogram and the self-report Children's Personality Questionnaire (CPQ) in 37 intellectually gifted fourth through seventh graders. Results showed that indirect factors that measure tension on the CPQ were correlated significantly with biofeedback measures. (NRB)

Peer reviewedSomerville, Addison W.; And Others – Teaching of Psychology, 1984
Graduate and undergraduate students showed a reduction in anxiety during a 16-week course designed to include information on the causes and effects of stress as well as practical techniques for stress management. A follow-up study showed that the students were still successfully using the stress management techniques a year later. (RM)

Peer reviewedCassel, Russell N. – Education, 1983
The computer interfaced with biofeedback instruments was used to assess need projections while viewing 132 picture slides in 11 areas of one's life space. A typical computerized questionnaire assessed stress for the dominant side projections. Interpretation was based on comparison with corresponding group norms. (Author/NQA)

Peer reviewedOmizo, Michael M.; Michael, William B. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1982
It was concluded that biofeedback-induced relaxation training increased attention to task and reduced impulsivity but did not affect the measure of locus of control on the population studied. (Author/SW)

Peer reviewedCassel, Russell N. – Psychology: A Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior, 1982
Describes Cassel Psych Center, a computerized biofeedback clinic, where the "well" patient is a major concern, and where biofeedback instruments are used with computers to form a Computerized-Biofeedback Clinical Support System. The Center's activities are designed to parallel the services of the pathologist in a medical setting. (PAS)

Lund, James P.; Kolta, Arlette – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2006
Mastication results from the interaction of an intrinsic rhythmical neural pattern and sensory feedback from the mouth, muscles and joints. The pattern is matched to the physical characteristics of food, but also varies with age. There are large differences in masticatory movements among subjects. The intrinsic rhythmical pattern is generated by…
