Findings are presented on the psychometric properties of a short psychological hardiness measure using subjects predominantly aged over 60 years. The sample of 223 participants was administered the hardiness questionnaire and other instruments twice, with a one-year test-retest interval. Results are presented and discussed. (Author/CT)

Mothers (N=36) with a history of child abuse or neglect or with no known history of child maltreatment participated in an experiment designed to assess reactions to a number of aversive stimuli. Results indicated that abusing mothers consistently ascribed more malevolent intentionality to their child than did other mothers. (BH)

Surveyed 421 high school females to determine the prevalence of bulimia. Teenage vomiters were found to have higher levels of somatic symptoms, anxiety, social dysfunction, depression, and disturbed attitudes toward food, eating, and dieting. Administered the Beck Hopelessness Scale to alcoholic (N=20) and heroin-addicted (N=20) women. Results indicated that although both groups expressed comparable levels of overall hopelessness, alcoholic women anticipated more success and better lives in the next 10 years than did the heroin-dependent women. Investigated parent coping behaviors in a sample of 100 mothers and 100 fathers of infants using the Family Coping Inventory. Factor analyses yielded three coping patterns: seeking social support and self-development; maintaining family integrity; and being religious, thankful, and content. No differences were found between the anxiety levels of mathematics majors compared to non-mathematics majors on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Anxiety levels of mathematics majors did not increase from freshman through senior years. Being in a mathematics classroom created no more anxiety than being in a non-mathematics classroom. (DT)
