Peer reviewedOverall, John E.; Starbuck, Robert R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1983
An alternative to Fisher's exact test and the chi-square test for homogeneity in two-by-two tables is developed. The method provides for Type I error rates which are closer to the stated alpha level than either of the alternatives. (JKS)
Descriptors: Expectancy Tables, Goodness of Fit, Hypothesis Testing, Nonparametric Statistics
Stempel, Guido H., III – Journalism Monographs, 1973
Compares the journalistic quality of the major news media in three selected Ohio communities. (RB)
Descriptors: Community Surveys, Comparative Analysis, Journalism, News Media
Peer reviewedSchmidt, William H.; Scheifley, Verda – American Educational Research Journal, 1973
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Nonparametric Statistics
Eckel, Karl – Programmiertes Lernen, Unterrichtstechnologie und Unterrichtsforschung, 1972
Descriptors: Classroom Research, Educational Experiments, Educational Research, Electricity
Peer reviewedMcMorris, Robert F. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1972
Approximations were compared with exact statistics obtained on 85 different classroom tests constructed and administered by professors in a variety of fields; means and standard deviation of the resulting differences supported the use of approximations in practical situations. (Author)
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Measurement Instruments, Reliability, Statistical Analysis
Age Differences in the Relationship Between Personality Questionnaire Factors and School Achievement
Ahammer, Inge M.; Schaie, K. Warner – J Educ Psychol, 1970
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Age Differences, Elementary School Students, Personality Assessment
Peer reviewedHarris, David P. – TESOL Quarterly, 1970
Findings of the test reported here were: (1) group-administered tests are practicable and may be scored reliably; (2) performance correlated highly with performance on standardized listening and grammar tests of English as a foreign language; (3) the difficulty of the test sentences seemed to be determined by their length and syntactical…
Descriptors: College Students, English (Second Language), Group Testing, Language Tests
Tarver, James D. – Rural Sociol, 1969
Revised version of paper presented at annual meeting of American Association for the Advancement of Science (Washington, D. C., December 1966).
Descriptors: Academic Education, Children, Employment Patterns, Family Structure
Peer reviewedEverett, J. E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1983
An approach to determining the number of factors to be retained from a factor analysis using split-half factor comparabilities is presented. The use of this approach in determining proper factor rotation is also discussed. (JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Goodness of Fit, Oblique Rotation
Peer reviewedGarg, Rashmi – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
This Monte Carlo study was designed to investigate empirically the efficacy of three statistical strategies for estimating the relationships in extreme group designs in terms of estimation of correlation, power and mean square error for the correlation. Alf and Abrahams's "covariance information statistic" proved to be the best strategy.…
Descriptors: Correlation, Evaluation Methods, Mathematical Formulas, Power (Statistics)
Michel, Xavier; Van Deth, Jean-Pierre – Francais dans le Monde, 1981
A synthetic presentation of the responses to a detailed questionnaire sent to French teachers all over the world. The report covers the following: (1) the extent of the inquiry; (2) geographical locations; (3) professional formation; (4) professional status; and (5) concluding summary. Many statistical tables are included. (AMH)
Descriptors: Content Analysis, Elementary Secondary Education, French, Higher Education
Peer reviewedAdams-Webber, J. – British Journal of Psychology, 1978
This research examines further the hypothesis that subjects tend to allot figures to the negative poles of constructs approximately 38 percent of the time. Sixty Canadian undergraduates judged 20 nonsense words as if these were the names of persons on 20 bipolar constructs. Results clearly supported the hypothesis. (Author)
Descriptors: Bias, College Students, Negative Attitudes, Questionnaires
Peer reviewedStrahan, Robert F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
The misleading character of the correlation coefficient was investigated in two studies of intuitive statistical behavior: subjective estimation of partial correlation and subjective estimation of the minimum possible correlation between two variables given their equal correlation with a third. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Comprehension, Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Researchers
Peer reviewedCurtis, Richard F.; Fairbank, Dianne Timbers – Social Forces, 1979
This study examines the relationship between frequency and type of social interaction and hostility toward ethnic groups. (Author/EB)
Descriptors: Blacks, Metropolitan Areas, Racial Discrimination, Social Bias
Peer reviewedOttenbacher, Kenneth J. – Journal of Research and Development in Education, 1989
Simulation studies were used to explore the relationship between Type I error rates (statistical conclusion validity) and multiple testing in data sets exhibiting varying degrees of independence. Implications for reporting and interpreting educational data are discussed, and methods of determining or reducing Type I error incidence are presented.…
