At the University of Iowa, a 5 percent random sample of the student population was surveyed concerning their use of alcohol. Of the student respondents, 33 percent reported a concern for the consequences of their drinking, and an equal proportion know of a student friend whom they thought had a drinking problem. (Author)

Thumin, Fred J. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1979
A number of ability tests were administered to 187 male job applicants ranging in age from 20 to 53 years. When test performance was compared across age groups, no significant differences were found. The findings are discussed in connection with the generally negative stereotype of the aging worker. (Author)

Issues related to individual and family life are studied as they vary across stages of the family life cycle. Strong relationships are found between stages in family life cycle and a number of such issues. Further analysis indicates that the major dimensions of the cycle are children and length of marriage. Investigated impact of interactions with kin on social integration in old age. A nonrandom sample of aged Baganda in Uganda was interviewed concerning perceptions of loneliness and social isolation. Results show that the majority of subjects did not view old age as a period of loneliness or isolation. (Author)

Predictor variables examined are self-reported health, income, education, and an activity index. Health and activity emerge as strong predictors of life satisfaction, while income influences life satisfaction indirectly via activity. The importance of investigating direct and indirect effects of variables via path analysis is discussed. (Author)
