Huberty, Carl J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
The basic notion of variability is generalized from a univariate context to a multivariate context using two matrix functions, a determinant, and a trace, yielding a number of alternative multivariate indices of shared variation. Some problems in the interpretation of tests of multivariate hypotheses are reviewed. (Author/BW)

Andersen, Erling B. – Psychometrika, 1976
A Bradley-Terry type model for paired comparisons is considered which allows for individual parameters and corresponding parameters for the choice-alternatives. Model is applied to data from a Danish investigation of blue collar attitudes towards alternative social gains. Model is compared to one suggested by Schonemann and Wang. (RC)

Hakstian, A. Ralph; Whalen, Thomas E. – Psychometrika, 1976
Details of a reasonably precise normalization technique for coefficient alpha are outlined, along with methods for estimating the variance of the normalized statistic. These procedures lead to the K-sample significance test. (RC)

Hanes, John C.; Hail, Michael – 1999
Many program evaluations involve some type of statistical testing to verify that the program has succeeded in accomplishing initially established goals. In many cases, this takes the form of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) with t-tests, analysis of variance, or some form of the general linear model. This paper contends that, at least…

Thompson, Bruce – 1999
As an extension of B. Thompson's 1998 invited address to the American Educational Research Association, this paper cites two additional common faux pas in research methodology and explores some research issues for the future. These two errors in methodology are the use of univariate analyses in the presence of multiple outcome variables (with the…

Whitney, Douglas R. – American Educational Research Journal, 1972
This paper describes two statistics (chi square and Kendall's S) which may be used to test hypotheses about the association between two variables when observations are cross-classified in a contingency table. (CK)

Fyans, Leslie J., Jr. – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1983
This chapter presents several facets of a new approach that uses generalizability theory to conduct cross-level inference in psychological and educational research. Unlike past models for cross-level research, this approach facilitates multiple-level investigations to test the external validity of results and findings. (Author/PN)

Garb, Howard N. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Used conjoint measurement to describe how systems-oriented therapists predict the occurrence of suicide. Although the systems approach emphasizes the interaction between an individual and a system, all 10 clinicians were described by an additive model. (Author/JAC)

Shine, Lester C., II – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The interpretation of significant left-tailed analysis of variance (ANOVA) F-ratios is supported by considering the case of a fixed effects ANOVA model. The conclusions of this case are generalizable to other standard ANOVA models. (Author/PN)

Wainer, Howard; Thissen, David – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
A class of naive estimators of correlation was tested for robustness, accuracy, and efficiency against Pearson's r, Tukey's r, and Spearman's r. It was found that this class of estimators seems to be superior, being less affected by outliers, reasonably efficient, and frequently more easily calculated. (Author/CTM)

Schumm, Walter R.; And Others – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1980
This review of the procedures involved in using path analysis provides guidelines for more effective future utilization of recursive path analysis in the field of family studies. (Author)

Good, Ron; Fletcher, Harold J. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1981
The importance of reporting explained variance in ANOVA designs is discussed. Three methods that can be used to obtain estimates of explained variance in ANOVA designs are described and applied to sixteen studies that were reported in recent NARST volumes. Recommends that researchers in science education report explained variance. (Author/DS)

Beckett, James, III; Schucany, William R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1979
The determination of a consensus ranking of products based on the rankings of each judge can be accomplished through the use of a Tukey type multiple comparison procedure. The extension to more than two groups is presented as an analysis of concordance table. (Author/CTM)
