Peer reviewedHubert, Lawrence; Arabie, Phipps – Psychometrika, 1992
A method is proposed for comparison of distinct partitions of the same set of n objects through a simple cross-product index defined between corresponding entries from two proximity matrices providing particular a priori codings of the within-class and between-class relationships for the partitions. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Equations (Mathematics), Mathematical Models, Matrices
Peer reviewedNeimeyer, Greg J. – Journal of Career Development, 1992
Explains Kelly's (1955) Personal Construct Theory and illustrates the uses of two techniques for using personal constructs in career assessment: the Role Construct Repertory Test and the laddering technique. (SK)
Descriptors: Career Choice, Career Counseling, Decision Making, Individual Psychology
Peer reviewedYoung, Paula Grafton – Mathematics Teacher, 1998
Presents a mathematics problem on probability and matrices placed in a context with insects. Provides an overview, prerequisites, materials needed, and worksheets. (ASK)
Descriptors: Mathematics Instruction, Matrices, Probability, Secondary Education
Peer reviewedDe Champlain, Andre; Gessaroli, Marc E. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1998
Type I error rates and rejection rates for three-dimensionality assessment procedures were studied with data sets simulated to reflect short tests and small samples. Results show that the G-squared difference test (D. Bock, R. Gibbons, and E. Muraki, 1988) suffered from a severely inflated Type I error rate at all conditions simulated. (SLD)
Descriptors: Item Response Theory, Matrices, Sample Size, Simulation
Peer reviewedMather, Laura A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 2000
Discussion of models for information retrieval focuses on an application of linear algebra to text clustering, namely, a metric for measuring cluster quality based on the theory that cluster quality is proportional to the number of terms that are disjoint across the clusters. Explains term-document matrices and clustering algorithms. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Cluster Analysis, Information Retrieval, Mathematical Formulas
Peer reviewedHunka, Steve; Leighton, Jacqueline – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1997
Computational and plotting problems are often encountered with the Johnson-Neyman analysis of covariance procedure (P. Johnson and J. Neyman, 1936) when using three covariates. Use of an appropriate design and contrast matrix for the general linear model and the Mathematica software system to overcome these problems is described. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Computer Oriented Programs, Matrices, Statistical Significance
Peer reviewedRovine, Michael J.; Molenaar, Peter C. M. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1998
Presents a LISREL model for the estimation of the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a patterned covariance matrix. The model is demonstrated for a 5 x 2 (Time x Group) ANOVA in which the data are assumed to be serially correlated. Similarities with the Statistical Analysis System PROC MIXED model are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Correlation, Estimation (Mathematics), Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedMeghabghab, George – Information Processing & Management, 2002
Discussion of citation analysis on the Web considers Web hyperlinks as a source to analyze citations. Topics include basic graph theory applied to Web pages, including matrices, linear algebra, and Web topology; and hubs and authorities, including a search technique called HITS (Hyperlink Induced Topic Search). (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Citation Analysis, Matrices, Search Strategies, Topology
Mackintosh, N. J.; Bennett, E. S. – Intelligence, 2005
Although it is sometimes claimed that Raven's Matrices provide an almost pure measure of g, there is evidence that the easier items in the Standard Progressive Matrices and in Set I of the Advanced Matrices measure a perceptual or Gestalt factor distinct from the more analytic items in the rest of the tests. There is also, however, both factor…

Dongsheng, Zhao; Yeong, Lee Tuo; Seng, Lee Cho; Fwe, Yap Sook – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2002
The matrix diagonalization method is used to solve a limit problem.
Descriptors: Matrices, Mathematics Instruction, Computation, Algebra
Tikoo, Mohan – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2002
Several authors have found many Pythagorean triple preserving matrices in recent years. The purpose of this note is to show that all these matrices, and in particular the results published in Deshpande's 2001 paper are special cases of the earlier results obtained by Palmer, Ahuja and Tikoo.
Descriptors: Correlation, Matrices, Mathematics Education, Validity
Trenkler, Gotz – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2002
In this note it is shown that the Moore-Penrose inverse of real 3 x 3 matrices can be expressed in terms of the vector product of their columns. Moreover, a simple formula of a generalized inverse is presented, which also involves the vector product.

Shockey, Tod L.; Snyder, Karen – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2007
The Maine Learning Results (MLR) expects the state's students in prekindergarten through grade 2 to describe two-dimensional shapes as well as use positional language. Requiring translations of two-dimensional shapes supports this expectation. Students in grades 3-4 are expected to "use transformations," while students in grade 5-8 are…

Trenkler, Gotz – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
For two given vectors of the three-dimensional Euclidean space we investigate the problem of identifying all rotations that transform them into each other. For this purpose we consider three types of rotation matrices to obtain a complete characterization. Finally some attention is paid to the problem of obtaining all rotations taking two vectors…

Koeber, Martin; Schafer, Uwe – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
An easy way to present the uniqueness of the square root of a positive semidefinite matrix is given.
