Peer reviewedFelton, Rebecca H. – Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 1992
A sample of 221 kindergarten children was administered tests of phonological processes and then subsequently measured for reading skill in third grade. Of 19 possible predictors, only rapid naming of letters, general ability, and discrimination of beginning sounds within words significantly contributed to prediction of reading outcome. (Author/JDD)

Peer reviewedSussman, Steve; And Others – Health Values: The Journal of Health Behavior, Education & Promotion, 1993
Researchers investigated which questionnaire items would differentiate high-risk adolescents from others, noting which items would differentiate high-risk youth at various tobacco use levels. Though several variables distinguished high-risk youths, only close friends' tobacco use and value placed on health significantly predicted regular smoking…

Peer reviewedDunn, Loraine – Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 1993
Examined the efficacy of assessing proximal factors in day care, such as children's experiences, and distal factors, such as caregiver characteristics, in predicting children's development. Proximal and distal quality were equally effective predictors. The validity of the National Association for the Education of Young Children's guidelines on…

Peer reviewedWachs, Theodore D.; And Others – Intelligence, 1993
This study assessed whether specific nutritional variables added unique variance to the prediction of toddler development outcomes in an Egyptian village, using 153 toddlers. Results suggest that, for the 18- to 23-month age, specific nutritional predictors can be identified and that there is specificity of nutritional action. (SLD)
Descriptors: Child Development, Child Health, Cognitive Processes, Foreign Countries

Peer reviewedLopez, Frederick G.; Lent, Robert W. – Journal of College Student Development, 1991
Tested the relationship and predictive qualities of three sets of efficacy beliefs. Results suggest that the three theoretically derived measures of relationship efficacy may help illuminate the psychological processes by which persons develop and maintain healthy and satisfying intimate relationships. (LLL)
Descriptors: Adjustment (to Environment), Beliefs, College Students, Higher Education
Peer reviewedResearch Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1989
Effects of age, physical activity, physical fitness, and body mass index (BMI) on the occurrence of orthopedic problems were examined. For men, physical fitness, BMI, and physical activity were associated with orthopedic problems; for women, physical activity was the main predictor. Age was not a factor for either gender. (JD)
Descriptors: Age, Body Composition, Injuries, Musculoskeletal System
Peer reviewedStout, William F. – Psychometrika, 1990
Using an infinite item test framework, it is argued that the usual assumption of local independence should be replaced by a weaker assumption--essential independence. The usual assumption of unidimensionality is replaced by a weaker and more appropriate statistically testable assumption of essential unidimensionality. (TJH)
Descriptors: Ability Identification, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Item Response Theory
