Important findings of the study indicate that regular cigarette smokers yield less to any smoking behavior changes than do the occasional smokers and well organized and executed anti smoking education programs should start as early as the eighth grade. (Author)

A general social class trend has been observed in the practices and attitudes of college students regarding sexual permissiveness, smoking, and drug usage. Of the socioeconomic classes examined, practices and attitudes appeared to be most liberal in the upper class, and most conservative in the lower middle class. (Author)

During the four year period of the contract, extensive clinical tests were completed which indicated significant immediate effects of cigarette smoking on healthy young males and females. Examined how a spouse can help or hinder an individual who wants to stop smoking. An experienced helpfulness score was calculated from the responses of married subjects (N=46) in a smoking cessation program. Successful abstainers had partners who were more reinforcing and less punishing of the subjects' efforts. (JAC)

Physicians who were trained to give antismoking advice to patients did so effectively soon after training, but their performance deteriorated during the next nine months. Antismoking effectiveness is maintained if advice-giving rates are monitored monthly and physicians receive immediate corrective feedback. (Author/MLW)

Compared histories of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use obtained by computerized interview, face-to-face interview, and self-report in clients (N=150) from an addiction treatment center. Multivariate analyses revealed no important differences. The computerized interview was rated less friendly but faster and more interesting. (Author/JAC)

Studied the effectiveness of hypnosis in the treatment of cigarette habituation. Volunteers (N=87) were randomly assigned to hypnosis, relaxation, or waiting list control groups. Hypnosis was found to be superior to relaxation only for subjects high in hypnotic susceptibility. Those who quit smoking increased food consumption. (Author/JAC)
