Results of workshops focusing on the indexing process conducted by Aslib Informatics Group and its predecessor the Co-ordinate Indexing Group are reported, noting seminars held in 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1981. Indexing techniques and subject words chosen for journal articles are appended. (EJS)

A computerized budget projection program developed for faculty use in proposal preparation is described. The three budget components are global budget parameters, personnel, and other direct operating costs. Efficiency of budget preparation is greatly increased, especially for multiple-year budgets. Principles for developing successful university-industry partnerships offered: (1) recognize each others goals; (2) match the capabilities interests, and facilities of the institutions with the people involved; (3) develop trust among the individuals; and (4) recognize administrative differences. As a result of fiscal problems associated with university research programs, universities and colleges have altered their affiliated nonprofit foundations to assist with a debt-management role, or have created a new nonprofit organization to provide this type of service. The procedural changes identified in analyzing the 1979 Marquette University internal grants competition had the positive effect of improving the reliability of the peer review ratings. Improved reliability results in greater confidence in the peer review process on the part of the applicants and the reviewers. (MLW)

Research is seen as under pressure to deal with externally applied standards at the same time that it adheres to its own internal code of ethics. The tension and possible conflicts generated by this situation can greatly affect the quality of the research project. (MLW)

Examines the effects of contemporaneous circumstances on the death attitudes of older adults. Findings suggest that the present social and psychological environment of the aged plays a less significant role in their attitudes toward death than is presently reflected in social gerontology. (Author)

Explores attitudes of dental and medical students toward death and dying. Attitudes toward death influencing choice between dental school and medical school are latent. Behavioral studies have shown that youths in various settings can function effectively as behavior change agents. The study used five 15- to 18- year-old male youths in a closed institutional setting as behavior change agents for five male youth counselors. Staff increased their frequency of positive verbal comments. (Author)

Describes some projects of the Far West Laboratory for Educational Research and Development and discusses how that research attempts to effect change in the processes of teaching and learning. (SK)

Reported is a program of undergraduate research in limnology and oceanography at the University of New Hampshire. The program, The Ocean Projects Course, involves students in all aspects of the research project, from drafting and defending a budget to summarizing and reporting their findings in a final report. As time spent in academic research becomes more controversial, it is proposed that a quantitative measure of research productivity be applied to faculty efforts. The formula takes into account single- and multiple-author publication rates and appropriate types of publication. The validity of a publication rate index is discussed. (MSE)
