Peer reviewedKing, P.M.; And Others – Human Development, 1983
Reports a two-year longitudinal study of 55 adolescents and young adults who were divided into three groups and given Reflective Judgment Interviews and the Concept Mastery Test to investigate sequentiality of reflective judgment stages. Results indicate support for seven hypothesized shifts in epistemic assumptions over time.(Author/RH)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedKurtines, William; Pimm, June B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
This paper reports the development and standardization of the Moral Development Scale (MDS), an individually-administered set of tasks designed to assess the overall level of moral reasoning within a Piagetian framework. Data are presented on the scale's reliability and validity as well as norms derived from the cross-validation sample. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Tests, Developmental Stages, Elementary Education, Moral Development
Peer reviewedGualtieri, C. Thomas C.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1983
The use of the diagnosis "borderline" was evaluated with 16 children (6 to 13 years old) who were referred for comprehensive evaluation. None met DSM III criteria for borderline personality disorder. The borderline label had a negative impact on some children and was not helpful for treatment planning or disposition. (Author/SEW)
Descriptors: Child Psychology, Classification, Clinical Diagnosis, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedCherkes, Miriam – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1983
The processing of a transitivity task by 7-, 9-, 11-, and 13-year-old learning disabled children was studied. All Ss, regardless of age, received highest scores on tasks involving linguistic input. There was no evidence of a developmental shift from spatial into linguistic reasoning. (Author/SEW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Developmental Stages, Exceptional Child Research, Learning Disabilities
Peer reviewedStengel, Susan R. – Young Children, 1982
Provides an overview of Kohlberg's five stages of moral reasoning and Damon's levels of positive justice. Argues that a conditioning approach to moral development is inadequate, suggesting teaching methods for facilitating moral development based on helping children understand principles and reasons. (RH)
Descriptors: Behavior Modification, Communication Skills, Developmental Stages, Discipline
Peer reviewedBell, Mae Arnold – Small Group Behavior, 1982
Reports analyses by topical cycle and group meeting of nine videotaped group discussions to extend Bales and Strodtbeck's often cited phase research. The analysis by group meeting suggesting an underlying motivational structure for phase progression, offers support of a three-phase hypothesis. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, College Students, Developmental Stages, Group Dynamics
Peer reviewedFischer, Lucy Rose – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1983
Examined grandparenthood as a role relationship. Grandmothers, in describing transition to grandparenthood, tended to emphasize emotional/symbolic investment in grandchildren rather than instrumental/interactional dimensions of relationships. The data suggest that grandparental role conceptions are modified by family network variable: Ambiguity in…

Peer reviewedNagy, Philip; Griffiths, Alan K. – Review of Educational Research, 1982
Many researchers, wishing to generalize to large numbers, have turned away from Piaget's measurement techniques to group paper-and-pencil tests. The psychometric properties of these tests and their statistical links with other constructs are examined, along with the relationship between the observed products of mental effort and their underlying…

Peer reviewedKlausmeier, Herbert J.; Sipple, Thomas S. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1982
The Piagetian developmental stage of concrete operational thought and the theoretical groupement structures underlying children's performance of 12 concrete operations tasks are discussed. Tasks were shown to develop in five related sets. Three factor structures were found in this longitudinal study. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Developmental Stages, Elementary Education, Factor Structure
Peer reviewedKane, Frances – Childhood Education, 1982
Indicates relationships between children's graphic expressions and thinking, writing, and reading. It is concluded that, if children are motivated to verbalize about personal experiences they have expressed graphically, they probably will be additionally motivated to read what they have written. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Child Language, Communication Skills, Developmental Stages, Freehand Drawing
Peer reviewedSaxe, Geoffrey B.; Kaplan, Rochelle – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
This study is an examination of developmental changes in children's use of pointing gestures to achieve an accurate count. Based on the data gathered, it is argued that the functional relation between the recitation of number names and children's pointing gestures in counting changes over the course of development. (Author/AL)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Child Development, Comparative Analysis, Computation
Peer reviewedWoodruff, Marci – Children's Theatre Review, 1982
Juxtaposes Erikson's theory of psychosocial development with Goldberg's concept of developmental drama. Suggests that research in this area could (1) strengthen the skills of directors, playwrights, and pedagogues and (2) offer educators and administrators a scientifically valid case for the value of children's theater in the schools. (PD)

Peer reviewedElkind, David – Intelligence, 1981
The question of how to integrate developmental (Piagetian) and psychometric conceptions and assessments of intelligence is considered. A solution which incorporates the contributions of each position--intelligence as forms and as traits--is offered. Premises and objectives of each tradition are reviewed and compared. Overlaps make synthesis…

Peer reviewedSchug, Mark C. – Theory and Research in Social Education, 1981
Summarizes research done in the 1950s, early 1960s, and mid-1970s about how children and adolescents think about economic related ideas. Economic reasoning develops in a stage-like manner similar to Piagetian stages of cognitive development, becoming more abstract, other-directed, and flexible with increasing age. (RM)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Children, Cognitive Development, Concept Formation
Peer reviewedMurray, Donald M. – English Education, 1982
Explains the development of teachers through three stages: first, learning how to perform as a teacher in front of a class; next, realizing both how to approach students at their own level and when to let the students do the talking; finally, teaching by revealing one's own learning. (RL)
Descriptors: Developmental Stages, English Teacher Education, Experiential Learning, Student Teacher Relationship
