Results from the study indicate that the awareness-of-rationalizations procedure is more effective in convincing discontented smokers of the personal relevance of the health hazards of smoking than the control procedure, which presents the same specific information to refute typical rationalizations. Previous tests of Holland's theory of vocational choice among members of professional occupations have demonstrated that it is predictive, useful, and formally acceptable. In a test among members of four nonprofessional occupations, however, it was not as predictive as previously demonstrated for professional and technical occupations. (Author)

Twelve months after a 24-hour period in a socially isolated, monotonous environment, subjects had reduced their rate of cigarette smoking by an average of 48 percent, compared with 16 percent for control subjects. A smaller sample reported similar results at the end of 24 months. (Author)

A study was done to determine if low self-concept is a common denominator as a causative factor of drug abuse among adolescents. The results showed that 75.5 percent of the subjects considered low self-concept to be one cause of their turning to drugs and 91.9 percent felt that boredom and curiosity was another. (Author)
