Zucker, David M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1990
A major pitfall with fixed-effects analysis of variance in the nested design is illustrated. Under the null hypothesis of no intervention effect, the rejection rate for "F(sub fixed)" in the nested design is greater than the putative Type I error rate of the test, potentially to an extreme degree. Gati, Itamar – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1989
Presents discussion of Holland's concept of congruence intended to complement discussion in special issue on the topic ("Journal of Vocational Behavior," No. 31, 1987). Laminack, Lyndon; Langee, Harvey R. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1990
This reaction paper reviews a report on the use of carbamazapine for behavioral disorders. The paper translates the original report's data into percentages and concludes that carbamazapine has a more limited role in behavior disorder treatment. The original report's author then clarifies various points criticized in the reaction paper. (JDD)

Alexander, Ralph A. – Personnel Psychology, 1988
Addresses issue of range enhancement effects on correlations, asserting that, while adding to or deleting from sample can affect variance and correlation in sample, increases or decreases in individual differences in intact sample resulting from such factors as history, maturation, training, and experience will not necessarily affect correlations.…

Krout, John A. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1989
Examined rural versus urban differences in health dependency for older adults (N=600) residing in a range of community settings from farm areas to a metropolitan central city. Found the rural/urban variable did not predict health dependency. Results did not support the rural elderly health disadvantage argument. (Author/ABL)

Mosenthal, Peter B. – Reading Teacher, 1988
Defines two types of antimony--minor, contradictory statements that have major effects--and shows how they abound in reading research. Concludes that the problem of antimonies must be resolved before research, on empirical grounds alone, can effectively improve practice. (MM)

Sipe, James W.; Doherty, William J. – American Journal of Family Therapy, 1993
Maintains that traditional training in research methods overlooks power of interactional dynamics in research process, preparing students inadequately for understanding obstacles to conducting research in community settings. Uses family systems theory to present and analyze ecological dynamics of research study of families and health conducted in…

Kempen, Gerard – Cognition, 1995
Discusses a 1993 study by Frazier, d'Arcais, and Coolen intended to test Schreuder's (1990) Morphological Integration model concerning the processing of separable and inseparable verbs. Suggests that the logic of the experiment is flawed and that the data do not warrant the author's conclusions. (DR)

Frazier, Lyn – Cognition, 1995
Discusses a 1993 study by Frazier, d'Arcais, and Coolen intended to test Schreuder's (1990) Morphological Integration model concerning the processing of separable and inseparable verbs, and attempts to refute Kempen's objections to their interpretation of the experimental results in this issue. Swanson, Gordon I. – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1991
Guidelines for achieving significance in vocational education research include the following: (1) specify whose problem is addressed; (2) describe consequences of conclusions or recommendations; (3) involve those affected in the inquiry; (4) do not let statistical precision substitute for purpose; and (5) avoid research to justify political…

Speer, David C. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1992
Considers relationship between statistically and clinically significant change. Sees Jacobson and Truax's index of clinically significant change as neglecting possible confounding of improvement rate estimates by regression to the mean. Describes alternative method (Edwards-Nunnally method) that incorporates an adjustment that minimizes this…
