Peer reviewedBurden, Paul R. – Action in Teacher Education, 1982
Research indicates that teachers have different job skills, knowledge, behavior, and attitudes at different points in their careers. As their needs, goals, and experiences change, different staff development activities are required. Tables show stages in teachers' careers and corresponding strategies for supervision. (PP)
Descriptors: Career Development, Developmental Stages, Educational Needs, Educational Strategies
Peer reviewedSiegel, Harvey – Educational Theory, 1981
Lawrence Kohlberg's empirical research does not, in itself, justify the claim that his higher stages of moral development are more adequately moral than lower stages; consequently, using Kohlbergian interventions to promote student development through these stages is unjustified. Empirical research, while necessary for planning and executing…

Peer reviewedBroadhead, Geoffrey D.; Bruininks, Robert H. – Physical Educator, 1983
This study investigated whether a pattern for the development of motor ability could be discerned, using the same range of motor performance tests with boys and girls at 10 different age levels. Researchers did not find a pattern as clear as has emerged in personality and intelligence development. (PP)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Classification, Developmental Stages, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedHale, James P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Investigated development of propositional logic and three formal logical schemata (underlying generic problem solving processes/operations) in adults (N=59) enrolled in their second year of medical school. Two students were formal on the 12-Piagetian tasks used, and the 57 remaining were classified as transitional formal. Implications are…

Peer reviewedEvans, Charles S. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1982
A linear regression model was used to test the relationship between the knowledge of Kohlberg's theory and moral stage development. A multiple regression analysis was used to test the multivariate relationship between one dependent and five independent variables. Neither analysis demonstrated a statistically significant relationship. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Age, Data Analysis, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedArlin, Patricia Kennedy – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A paper-and-pencil test of seven of Inhelder and Piaget's formal operational schemes was developed. Multitrait-multimethod cross-validation procedures indicated that the objective test is a valid and reliable measure. It has the advantage of use in a large group setting without the need for trained clinical interviewers. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Adults, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Measurement, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedHaslett, Beth – Quarterly Journal of Speech, 1983
Illustrates how children handle conflict and adjust to one another when their goals are incompatible. Found clear developmental trends: with increasing age, children used more compliance-gaining strategies; their compliance-gaining strategies became more adaptive; and their conflict episodes became more complex. (PD)
Descriptors: Child Development, Communication Research, Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution
Peer reviewedKrau, Edgar – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1982
Tests a career model of immigrants with the following stages: crystallization, vocational retraining, job entry and trial, establishment, and maintenance. Two samples of immigrants are followed up. The research brought into focus the continuity of the process of career reconstruction after the interruption of vocational activity caused by…
Descriptors: Adjustment (to Environment), Career Development, Cohort Analysis, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedPower, Clark – Journal of Educational Thought, 1981
In describing the just community approach to moral education developed at Cluster alternative high school, the author focuses on the setting of collective norms and relationships between these norms and Kohlberg's moral development stages. He finds this approach to moral education to be more comprehensive than the moral discussion approach. (SJL)
Descriptors: Behavior Standards, Developmental Stages, Discussion (Teaching Technique), Educational Environment
Van Oteghen, Sharon; Jacobson, Phyllis A. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1981
Learning, beginning in infancy, depends chiefly upon the nature and quality of movement experiences. Since 50 percent of a child's potential for learning is developed by age five, it is essential that movement programs be devised for children of preschool age. Movement programs must be geared to the individual child's developmental level. (JN)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Developmental Stages, Individualized Instruction, Movement Education
Robbins, R. Robert – Engineering Education, 1981
This investigation focused on the stage of formal operational reasoning in the acquisition of astronomy concepts, and on efficacy of different instructional experiences for facilitating cognitive change in college students. Included are selected results and directions for future research. (SK)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Astronomy, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Development
Peer reviewedBender, David S.; Milakofsky, Louis – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1982
Cognitive performance of college students (N=225) on "An Inventory of Piaget: Developmental Tasks" (IPDT) was related to Scholastic Aptitude Tests and performance in both college chemistry lectures and laboratory classes. Relationship of Piagetian tasks to learning and instructional activities in introductory chemistry classes is…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Academic Aptitude, Chemistry, Cognitive Development
Peer reviewedWhitelaw, Brian – Elementary School Guidance and Counseling, 1982
Explores Piaget's theory as it relates to counseling and the application of Piagetian principles for counselors. Outlines Piaget's four cognitive developmental stages. Suggests counselors should match the child's level of development with the counseling strategy that will most effect change. (JAC)
Descriptors: Child Development, Cognitive Development, Counseling Techniques, Counselor Client Relationship
Mooney, Craig M. – Canadian Counsellor, 1980
Psychological aspects of aging, based on gerontological hypotheses and research, are presented under three headings: intellectual abilities; emotional capacities; and motor capabilities. Consequences are discussed. Well-being throughout life depends on fulfillment of fundamental human needs; existential needs for nourishment, stimulation, rest,…
Descriptors: Age, Aging (Individuals), Developmental Stages, Emotional Development
Peer reviewedSmith, Allen – Clearing House, 1981
Because Piaget's developmental stage theory indicates that many junior high students may still be functioning at the "concrete operations" level, the author suggests that middle-school teaching be changed to include more concrete, "hands on" activities. (SJL)
