Malone, Thomas W.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1979
Ten models are proposed for predicting a student's final grade placement in a computer-assisted instruction curriculum from the time the student spends taking lessons. Two of the simplest models, using only the most recent point and parameters estimated for the whole group, are best at prediction. (Author/RD)

Dowker, Ann – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1992
Described are the strategies of 44 academic mathematicians on a set of computational estimation problems involving elementary multiplication and division. Discussion centers on the theoretical implications evident from pretest/posttest results in terms of the variety of strategies used and how the choice of strategy changed across the two tests.…

Becker, Douglas F.; Forsyth, Robert A. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1992
Measurement scales developed using Thurstone and item-response theory (IRT) methods of scaling achievement tests for the same single-level data were compared for approximately 4,000 high school students taking the Iowa Tests of Educational Development in 1975. Results of both approaches indicate that variability increases as grade level increases.…
