The characteristics of programs in business administration at Ph.D. and D.B.A. granting institutions were investigated, including: number of students, programs per year, university staff directly involved; cost of program to the client; length of program; and how and how much the faculty was compensated. A study that tested a modified version of Tinto's student attrition model on a Chicano student population in two year colleges is discussed. Measures of goodness of fit were examined to provide indices for the overall fit of the causal model in the study. (Author/MLW)

A variable causal model was used to estimate the influence of college on the development of humanitarian/civic involvement values. The findings suggest the importance of social involvement during college as a positive influence on the humanizing of values. A case study at a major state university illustrates the opportunities and pitfalls accompanying the use of interinstitutional comparison. West Virginia University's experience suggests that the greatest impact of institutional and interstate comparisons is likely to be in long-range rather than short-term planning. (Author/MSE)

Randomly selected faculty from four state universities in Texas were surveyed to determine the degree to which the library and its resources influenced their decisions to accept university positions. The correlates of average departmental annual research journal publication rates of faculty were examined in three disciplines: chemistry, history, and psychology. The initial effort in applying the SAT-M to young Chinese students revealed that many of them reason extraordinarily well mathematically before age 13 and before having covered the bulk of the high-school mathematics curriculum. A sample of 5,162 undergraduates at 74 institutions was surveyed to identify the effect of the college environment on students' educational aspirations. Several environmental factors had modest but significant effects on aspirations; however, the magnitude of the effects differed somewhat by gender and institutional selectivity. (Author/MLW)

Two explanations of congruency of ideal (intent) and actual (action/behavior) work of faculty are examined--reward expectations and referent others.
