Through use of confirmatory maximum likelihood factor analysis in conjunction with the LISREL V computer program, an evaluation was made of the validity of higher-order ability constructs in structure-of-intellect tests all containing semantic content and operations of cognition or evaluation. The regression-discontinuity design (RDD) offers the possibility of making inferences about causal effects from observations on selected groups. It is shown how partial covariance, part and partial correlation, and regression weights can be estimated and tested for significance by means of a factor analytic model. Comparable partial covariance, correlations, and regression weights have identical significance tests. (Author)

Actual kurtotic and skewed data and varied sample sizes and estimation methods demonstrated that normal theory maximum likelihood and generalized least square estimators were fairly consistent and almost identical. Standard errors tended to underestimate the estimator's true variation but the problem was not serious for large samples. (SLD)

A method is proposed for partially analyzing additive ipsative data (PAID). Transforming the PAID according to a developed equation preserves the density of the transformed data, and maximum likelihood estimation can be carried out as usual. Simulation results show that the original structural parameters can be accurately estimated from PAID. (SLD)

Examined the relative performance of two commonly used methods of parameter estimation in factor analysis, maximum likelihood (ML) and ordinary least squares (OLS) through simulation. In situations with a moderate amount of error, ML often failed to recover the weak factor while OLS succeeded. Also presented an example using empirical data. (SLD)
