Achievement motivation was successfully measured among male and female college students by having the students rate eight Thematic Apperception Test cards for similarity and scaling the results in two dimensions: number of persons and degree of strong affect. Multidimensional scaling analysis was used to examine a sample of adolescents' cognitive appraisals of major and daily stressful events. The desirability of events was the only major feature for the entire sample. Older adolescents also distinguished the impact of events on their lives and generality of causes of events. (Author/JAZ)

Describes the use of ALSCAL, a computer program for multidimensional scaling, to map enrollment in 49 electives at Drexel University's College of Information Studies during two time periods. The Endler S-R Inventory of General Trait Anxiousness was analyzed employing Smallest Space Analysis (SSA) and factor analysis. The SSA yielded a two-dimensional lattice partitioning the space into regions corresponding to the situations specified in the inventory. Proposes an inductively derived taxonomy as a more valid and reliable classification scheme of compliance-gaining strategies.
